Mostar, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, is one of those places that you don’t just visit: you feel it. Its famous Stari Most bridge, its Ottoman heritage, and the still-visible scars of war make this small city an intense, authentic, and deeply photogenic destination.

In our case, we drove to Mostar from Sarajevo, and the journey itself was an experience: the road winds through spectacular mountain landscapes, past impossibly green rivers, and through villages that seem frozen in time. If you’re planning your trip through Bosnia, let me tell you something: the journey to Mostar is worth it.

Here’s the most complete guide to what to see in Mostar, Bosnia, and how to plan your perfect visit.

How to get to Mostar (and why the journey is worth it)

The easiest way to get there is by car from Sarajevo (about two and a half hours). The road offers some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. If you drive, take your time.

You can also arrive by train or bus, but you would lose some of the flexibility to stop at natural viewpoints.

We did it by car and it was a totally right decision: the feeling of freedom and the landscapes made the day start long before we set foot in the historic center.

Must-see sights in Mostar, Bosnia

Stari Most, the symbol of Mostar

The Stari Most (Old Bridge) is the soul of the city. Built in the 16th century by the Ottoman Empire, it was destroyed during the Bosnian War in 1993 and rebuilt in 2004.

It was incredibly hot when we arrived. After leaving our bags at the Sinan Han Hotel, very close to the historic center, we walked to the bridge. Sitting at a bar right underneath it, ordering a cold beer, and gazing at it for a few minutes was one of those moments that stays with you.

At times it threatened rain… and it did fall a little. That contrast between intense heat and a brief downpour made the scene even more cinematic.

Tip: Take a while to watch the local divers plunge into the Neretva River from the top of the bridge. It’s a tradition… and it’s hair-raising.

The historic center and its Ottoman alleyways

Mostar’s old town is small but very charming. Cobblestone streets, craft shops, carpets, copper work, and restaurants with outdoor terraces.

We had lunch at a small table right in the heart of the historic center, outdoors. Eating there, surrounded by Ottoman architecture and with the sound of the river in the background, was one of the most pleasant moments of the day.

Take time to get lost without a destination. Mostar is not something you can visit in a hurry.

The Karadoz Bey Mosque

The Karadoz Mosque is one of the most important in Mostar and a must-see to understand the Ottoman influence in the city.

Its interior is understated and elegant. If you climb the minaret, you’ll get a different perspective of the rooftops and the river.

Beyond the architecture, visiting a mosque here helps you understand the religious diversity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, something that deeply shapes the country’s identity.

Kriva Ćuprija, the small hidden bridge

Very close to Stari Most is the Kriva Ćuprija bridge, smaller but equally photogenic. Many people overlook it, but it deserves a leisurely stop.

The best viewpoint in Mostar: Fortica and its transparent walkway

Before entering the old town, we did something I highly recommend: going up the Fortica Skywalk.

It’s a transparent walkway high up, offering one of the best panoramic views of Mostar. And the best part: it’s free.

Seeing the city from above before exploring it on foot completely changes your perspective. It helps you understand its size, its mountainous surroundings, and the silhouette of Stari Most rising above the river.

If you’re looking for the best viewpoint in Mostar, this is the place.

Mostar in a day: perfect itinerary morning, afternoon and evening

If you only have one day in Mostar, this would be my suggestion based on our experience:

Tomorrow: viewpoint and first contact

Climb to Fortica.

Walk across the Stari Most bridge early.

Take a leisurely stroll through the historic center.

Afternoon: mosques and strategic pause

Visit the Karadoz mosque.

Lunch on the terrace.

Rest by the river.

At sunset: the free tour with Ivan, the best decision of the day

The best part came at the end. We took a free tour with Iván and it was spectacular.

It wasn’t your typical superficial tour. He explained the context of the war, the still-existing divisions, the reconstruction of the bridge, and recent history with impressive clarity and approachability. We finished at night, with the city illuminated, understanding Mostar much better than when we arrived.

If you can only do one organized activity in Mostar, make it this free tour. It makes all the difference between “seeing” the city and truly understanding it.

Afterwards, there’s nothing better than having dinner in the old town and enjoying the nightlife.

Where to stay in Mostar

We stayed at the Sinan Han Hotel, very close to the historic center. The location was perfect: we could walk to all the important sights.

My recommendation is to sleep near the old town to take advantage of the nightlife and avoid unnecessary travel.

What to see near Mostar if you have more time

If you have more than one day, you can visit:

Blagaj and his dervish monastery.

Počitelj, medieval village.

Kravice Falls.

Medjugorje.

Mostar is a perfect base for exploring Herzegovina.

Practical tips for visiting Mostar

Avoid the middle of the day in summer: the heat can be extreme.

Wear comfortable shoes (uneven cobblestones).

Dedicate at least one full day.

Take the free sunset tour.

Don’t limit yourself to the bridge: explore viewpoints and neighborhoods.

Conclusion

Visiting Mostar, Bosnia is much more than seeing a famous bridge. It’s about experiencing the blend of cultures, recent history, and natural beauty in a small but vibrant area.

Between arriving by road, the view from Fortica, the beer under the Stari Most and the free tour with Ivan at dusk, I understood that Mostar is not just a stop on the route: it is a complete experience.

If you’re planning a trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina, book at least a day here. I assure you, you won’t regret it.

Sarajevo, a city between two cultures

One of the first things that strikes you upon arrival is how two cultures coexist, separated by little more than a street corner. In just a few minutes, you can go from a distinctly Ottoman environment, with mosques and bazaars, to one with a strong Austro-Hungarian influence, featuring Central European-style buildings and wide avenues.

This contrast defines Sarajevo and can be perceived by walking through the city, observing its architecture and tasting its gastronomy.

Must-see neighborhoods of Sarajevo

Ottoman Quarter (Baščaršija)

Baščaršija is the historical heart and one of the most important places to see in Sarajevo. Here you will find:

Cobblestone streets full of artisan shops

Historic mosques

Traditional cafes where you can try Bosnian coffee, a true cultural experience.

Staying near this area is a great idea. In our case, we stayed right at the beginning of the Ottoman Quarter, at the Hotel Art, which made sightseeing much easier, and it also had parking, something unusual in the city center.

Austro-Hungarian zone

As you move away from Baščaršija, the city changes completely:

Austro-Hungarian period buildings

Wide avenues

Churches and administrative buildings

This abrupt change helps to understand the complex history of Sarajevo and its cultural mix.

What to see in Sarajevo

Free tour of Sarajevo (highly recommended)

One of the best ways to start exploring the city is to take a free walking tour of Sarajevo. We did, and it was excellent: the guide explained the recent history, the conflict of the 1990s, and the main points of interest in the city center in a clear, engaging, and well-contextualized way.
