Rome 5 days

We spent four days in Rome now and two more days at the end of the tour, so six nights were allotted.

We started the tour of the city with a free tour, but the detailed itinerary for the city is in What to See in Rome in 5 Days, because although there were six nights, you know that if we discount the arrival time we only have 5 full days left.

The main advice here in Rome is to book all your tickets in advance, as they tend to sell out, especially during peak season.

Visits that we recommend booking in advance:

• Colosseum. A guided tour is a good option for visiting.
• Vatican Museums. You can also choose a guided tour.
• Pantheon Official site or skip-the-line tickets
• Free Tour. I think it’s a good option for getting your first taste of the city.

The hotel we chose was very nice, opposite Parliament, Rhome Luxury Suite.

From here on, we continue traveling by car every day, but I’ll leave the distances of our public transportation journeys in the graphs.

Naples 230 km 4 days

Our next stop was Naples. Before that, we’d pass by a place we hadn’t yet seen, the Palace of Caserta. That morning, we went to pick up the car at Termini; we rented it from Discovercars.

But here I have to tell you something we discovered just a few days ago while uploading videos about Italy. And another day we visited the ruins of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and climbed Mount Vesuvius. Remember, since we were driving, we optimized our time, but otherwise, it’s best to choose just one of the sites.

Amalfi Coast 4 nights 50 km

We spent four nights on this coast, dividing them into one night in Sorrento, one in Positano, one in Amalfi, and the last in Vietri Sul Mare. We were going to include Capri, but the ferries didn’t depart that day due to wind. From Sorrento to Vietri Sul Mare, it’s a total of 52 km along the coast, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Matera 1 night 255 km

Matera dazzles with its cave dwellings, its history, and the walk through its ancient streets that captivate you at every turn—a destination well worth the visit.

We chose to stay at a cave hotel here, 19.52 Matera. We enjoyed the night in Matera and headed off early to Puglia.

Alberobello 2 nights 70 km

Alberobello was the base for those two days, allowing us to explore just a little of what this area has to offer. Puglia is one of the most beautiful and picturesque areas to visit in Italy.

We stayed in a trullo, Trullo Monte Santo. During that time, we toured the city center with the trulli, and other villages like Martina Franca, Ostuni, Polignano a Mare, Locorotondo, and Cisternino. I’ll leave the planned route in a special post, *Route through the most beautiful villages of Puglia*. If you go, I recommend spending more days there, of course, if you can, because it was very short for us.

The next morning would be a day of only road, 870 km separated us from Mestre.

Venice 2 days 870 km

Venice was the next stop. We arrived on the outskirts of Mestre in the early evening, Malcontenta specifically. We checked into the Hotel Palladio, had dinner, and then rested. Tomorrow we could cross to the island very early to dedicate two full days to it, since we were staying two nights there.

Visits that we recommend booking in advance:

• St. Mark’s Basilica. A guided tour is a good option for visiting.
• Doge’s Palace. You can also choose a guided tour.
• Free Tour I think it’s a good option to get your first contact with the city.

So after those two days, we continued on to Modena and Maranello to visit the Ferrari museums and take a test drive, which we’ll feature in a special post because it was an impressive experience. In the afternoon, we arrived in Pisa.

Pisa 1 night 400 km

Pisa awaits us with its leaning tower, but it’s not just that. To begin with, the entire monumental complex, including its Cathedral and Baptistery, is truly impressive. We stayed very close to the Piazza del Milagro, a B&B in an old mansion that included breakfast and had parking inside, which was convenient for us, B&B Antica Piazza dei Miracoli.

Cinque Terre 2 days 100 km

We arrived in Vernazza in the morning, drove to the Vernazza parking lot and then from there we took a transfer to the town, where we had our accommodation for the two nights..

We bought a train pass and used it to travel between towns and villages. Needless to say, they’re all beautiful. It’s hard to choose one to stay in; many people stay in Le Spezia, which is also an option, but we wanted to enjoy these places both at dawn and at night when no one else is around.

We were talking about insurance. It’s another essential. It’s a requirement for entering Europe. But beyond that, always remember that it doesn’t affect your overall travel budget, and if something happens to us, the costs can be very high. It was dawn and after the transfer took us back to the parking lot to get back on the road, we were now 180 kilometers from Florence.

Florence 3 days 180 km

We arrived in the morning since we were relatively close and we would enjoy 3 almost full days in the city without visiting other places since we would visit the towns of Tuscany on other days..

Like so many others, we’d start Florence with a free tour, but like every other place, there’s a special video, with the entire day-by-day itinerary, including admission prices and distances. Here, we’ll just tell you that we made this stop. We spent three nights at a B&B near the Arno River, Le Stanze dei Ghibellini.

Visits that we recommend booking in advance:

• The Duomo monumental complex. Full explanations are in the Florence post.

San Gimignano one night, 60 kilometers

We arrived in San Gimignano with the intention of taking a leisurely stroll through this charming medieval town. We strolled through its cobblestone streets, admiring its famous towers and the unique atmosphere that surrounds it. We decided to stay one night to fully experience the town and feel the magic of the place when the sun sets and it empties of tourists.

If there is a place we identify with Tuscany, it is San Gimignano.

As I told you, we stayed here one night. It was an old period palace, Palazzo Buonaccorsi.

We hit the road again. Fortunately, the landscape is the same, as are the towns along the way. We arrived in Siena.

Siena one night 40 kilometers

When planning a trip to Tuscany, the range of options available is so vast that it’s very difficult to decide. Italy has so many things to see, and Tuscany is no exception.

Siena was a city we chose to stay in. I think it’s worth it. I don’t know if it’s often chosen as a destination in itself, but rather as a day trip. The truth is that a visit to its Cathedral is very, very worthwhile. Its floor, which is only open on certain dates, is a wonderful work of art, as is Piazza del Campo, where the Palio di Siena is held every year. 2 nights in Montepulciano 65 kilometers

In the midst of all these last tours, we took the opportunity to visit other Tuscan towns, but in Montepulciano we would stay two nights to be able to explore the Val d’Orcia area more leisurely, since it is one of the areas I like the most.

Montepulciano is beautiful and has that Tuscan essence of a medieval town and captivating wines. We stayed at a B&B in the old town, La Rhugetta Guest House.

Once here, we can visit many places in Val D’Orcia, such as San Quirico, Pienza, and Montalcino, to name just a few places to visit in Italy.

Civita di Bagnoregio one night 150 kilometers

It was our last night before returning to Rome and we chose this town that we had often photographed and which is disappearing.

We arrived at Civita di Bagnoregio with great anticipation, crossing the long bridge that connects it to the rest of the world. It’s a place that seems suspended in time, with its stone houses, quiet streets, and breathtaking views of the valley. Dawn was breaking in Florence and we started with our first stop, less than 80 kilometers away Lucca was waiting for us.

Lucca: the walled jewel of Tuscany

Lucca is one of those cities that surprises without making too much noise. It doesn’t have the fame of Florence or the typical picture-postcard charm of Pisa, but anyone who visits it will fall in love forever. It’s one of Tuscany’s best-kept secrets… and perhaps that’s why it retains its charm intact.

Its most distinctive feature is its Renaissance walls, which still surround the entire historic center. But the curious thing is that today they are no longer a barrier: they have become a tree-lined promenade perfect for exploring on foot or by bike, with unique views of the city and its reddish rooftops.

Within the walls, Lucca is a charming labyrinth of narrow streets, ancient churches, and lively squares. The Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, built on the site of an ancient Roman amphitheater, is one of the most photogenic in all of Italy.

In the very center of Lucca, where the Roman Forum once stood, stands one of the city’s most impressive churches: the Church of San Michele in Foro. Its location is no coincidence—this church has been, since the Middle Ages, a meeting point, a place of passage, and a place of contemplation.

Pisa 1 night in Tuscany

20 kilometers separate us from this Tuscan city with its leaning tower, of which we have a full video and where we spent a night.

Pisa: more than its leaning tower

Pisa is one of those cities immediately associated with a single image: the Leaning Tower. However, beyond this famous monument, Pisa offers a rich history, stunning architecture, and an atmosphere that goes far beyond its worldwide fame.

The heart of the city is Piazza dei Miracoli, home to the Tower, as well as the Pisa Cathedral, a jewel of the Romanesque style, and the Baptistery, famous for its unique acoustics. The Tower, though the star of the show, is not the square’s only attraction; its monumental complex forms a masterpiece that reflects the city’s historical and artistic richness. Certaldo

In the heart of Tuscany, among rolling hills and postcard-perfect vineyards, lies a medieval haven of surprising authenticity: Certaldo. Lesser-known than other Tuscan gems, but with a charm second to none, this small town is ideal for those looking for a quieter getaway, away from the crowds.

Certaldo has an upper and lower part; you can go up by funicular or by car. Once you arrive, you can leave the car and pay at the parking meter before immersing yourself in the medieval village, and then it’s best to let yourself go. Take a leisurely stroll along Via Boccaccio, the main street named after the illustrious writer Giovanni Boccaccio, who was born here. You can even visit his house, now a museum, to learn more about the author of the Decameron.

Another must-see is the Palazzo Pretorio, with its façade covered in stone and ceramic coats of arms that tell the story of those who ruled the city. From there, you also have beautiful views of the Tuscan countryside surrounding Certaldo. Ideal for taking photos… or simply lingering for a while, admiring the scenery.

San Gimignano: the city of medieval towers

Walking through its streets is like walking through a postcard of ancient Tuscany, and upon reaching Piazza della Cisterna, the medieval landscape is completed by its famous fountain and the sound of outdoor cafes. A stop here for a drink while people-watching is one of those moments you’ll never forget and treasure in your travel memories.

One of the city’s highlights is the Cathedral of San Gimignano, also known as the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta. This soberly beautiful church houses impressive medieval frescoes depicting biblical scenes, turning its interior into a museum of religious art.

San Gimignano also invites you to climb its towers, such as the Torre Grossa, the tallest of all, from which you can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the city and its surroundings. Its historic center, surrounded by imposing walls, is perfect for exploring on foot and getting lost among cobblestone streets, ancient arches, and medieval towers. One of its greatest attractions is the Porta all’Arco, an Etruscan gate from the 4th century BC that still stands today, a silent witness to the city’s most ancient origins.

Piazza dei Priori is the heart of Volterra. It houses the Palazzo dei Priori, the oldest civil building in all of Tuscany and one of the most notable examples of Gothic architecture. Nearby is Volterra Cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin, with an elegant interior and an intimate atmosphere, perfect for lingering and contemplating.

Another highlight is the Roman Theater, dating from the 1st century BC, which is surprisingly well preserved. From the stands, one can imagine the classical performances that were held here more than two thousand years ago.

Volterra is also famous for its alabaster, a translucent stone that local artisans have worked with for centuries. The shops and workshops in the city center are the ideal place to discover this art form so characteristic of the city.

Monteriggioni

We continue on our way, which is a trip in itself. Tuscany is one of those places where we believe a road trip is a pleasure. We cover about 50 more kilometers.

Monteriggioni: a walled gem frozen in time

Halfway between Siena and San Gimignano, on a hill covered with olive groves and vineyards, rises Monteriggioni, a small town that looks like something out of a medieval film. Completely surrounded by an almost intact circular wall, this Tuscan haven is one of the best-preserved examples of 13th-century military architecture.

Excursion to Pienza, Monteriggioni and Montalcino

From a distance, the walls with their 14 towers resemble a stone crown enclosing centuries of history. Built by the Republic of Siena as a defensive fortress against Florence, they still retain their original structure today, making Monteriggioni a veritable open-air museum.

Entering through one of its two main gates—Porta Franca or Porta Fiorentina—you’ll find a serene and authentic atmosphere. In the center of town is Piazza Roma, with its Romanesque church and stone houses, surrounded by small cafes and shops selling local products.

One of the main attractions is the opportunity to walk along a section of the wall, from which you can enjoy spectacular views of the Tuscan landscape. And although the town is small, its atmosphere and history make it unforgettable.

Monteriggioni is also known for its mention in Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, where he compared its towers to giants. This literary image reinforces the feeling of being in a place beyond time, where history and poetry meet at every turn.

Siena is one of those cities you don’t just visit, you experience. With its stately air, its history of rivalry with Florence, and an aesthetic that seems frozen in time, this Tuscan gem offers a unique experience amidst cobblestone streets, Gothic art, and living traditions.

The heart of the city is the unmistakable Piazza del Campo, one of Italy’s most beautiful squares, with its shell-like shape and gentle slope that makes it a natural amphitheater. The famous Palio di Siena is held here, a horse race that is not just a tourist attraction but a true expression of local identity and pride.

Dominating the square is the Palazzo Pubblico, the historic seat of government and now a museum, with frescoes reflecting medieval political thought. Next to it rises the Torre del Mangia, from whose summit there are spectacular views of the city and the Tuscan landscape.

Another must-see is Siena Cathedral, a masterpiece of Italian Gothic architecture. Its black and white façade is striking from afar, but its most impressive feature is its interior: marble columns, frescoes by great artists, and a unique mosaic floor that tells biblical and philosophical stories. Nearby are the Baptistery of San Giovanni and the Opera Museum, which complete the monumental complex.

Another must-see is the Museo dell’Accademia Etrusca, which houses a valuable archaeological heritage that connects Cortona with its Etruscan and Roman past. And for lovers of sacred art, the Diocesan Museum houses works by Fra Angelico and Luca Signorelli, who was born in this region.

And of course, if Cortona sounds familiar to you, it’s probably because of Under the Tuscan Sun. This town was the real-life setting for the story of Frances Mayes, an American writer who decided to change her life after buying a dilapidated old house right here.

Montepulciano: wine, history, and beauty at every turn

Montepulciano, the “queen” of the Val d’Orcia, is one of those Tuscan towns that looks like something out of a Renaissance painting. Perched on a hilltop, this charming town welcomes you with narrow streets, picturesque piazzas, and stunning medieval and Renaissance architecture. As you wander through its cobbled alleys, you can feel history unfolding all around you, from the ancient walls to the imposing churches and palaces.

One of Montepulciano’s greatest attractions is its Piazza Grande, the main square, home to buildings such as the Palazzo Comunale, reminiscent of Siena’s Torre del Mangia, and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, which impresses with its simplicity and beauty. Just a few steps away, you can visit the Church of San Biagio, a magnificent example of Renaissance architecture, located just outside the historic center and surrounded by breathtaking scenery.

But Montepulciano is also home to one of Tuscany’s finest wines, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The town and its surrounding areas are filled with traditional underground wineries dating back centuries, some of which are open for guided tours and wine tastings. These cellars, some of which are located beneath the city’s historic center, stretch for miles and maintain an authentic, historic atmosphere.

Pienza

Pienza and its connection to Gladiator

Pienza, a Renaissance gem in the heart of Tuscany, is known for its architecture and stunning views of the Val d’Orcia. This small town, planned by Pope Pius II, is famous for its architectural harmony and beautiful landscapes. Pienza is also a location featured in some scenes from the film Gladiator. Although it wasn’t the main setting for the film, its streets and views were used to capture the serene beauty of ancient Rome, providing an air of grandeur and nostalgia that complements Maximus’s epic story. The connection between Pienza and Gladiator highlights how Tuscany, with its blend of history, art, and nature, has been a source of inspiration for many film productions. Although many of the film’s scenes were filmed in studios and other parts of the world, the Val d’Orcia served as a beautiful natural backdrop for some of the exterior scenes, especially those depicting the vast fields and rural landscapes that represent ancient Rome.

Montalcino

Montalcino is one of Tuscany’s most charming destinations, known for its stunning medieval castle and its famous Brunello di Montalcino wine. Perched on a hill overlooking the Val d’Orcia, the small town offers spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards, especially during the harvest months, when the fields turn golden. Montalcino retains an authentic atmosphere, with cobblestone streets and buildings that reflect its rich history.

The heart of the town is its 14th-century Montalcino Castle, from where visitors can enjoy unique views of the region. Piazza del Popolo, lined with local shops and restaurants serving the finest Tuscan cuisine, is the perfect place to stroll and relax. The Abbey of Sant’Antimo, located on the outskirts of Montalcino, is another major attraction. It is a Romanesque church surrounded by a serene and majestic landscape, evoking a sense of peace and spirituality.

San Quirico d’Orcia

While La Foce is a historic residence with world-famous gardens, we didn’t visit it, but instead went in search of this photogenic hill with cypress trees.

San Filippo Thermal Baths

Now we change scenery and go to the hot springs

The Terme di San Filippo, located in Bagni San Filippo in the Val d’Orcia region, are known for their thermal waters, whose therapeutic properties have been valued since Roman times. What makes this place special are its white limestone formations and natural terraces, which create a unique landscape, similar to that of Pamukkale in Turkey. Along the Fosso Bianco stream, visitors can enjoy various thermal pools and small waterfalls surrounded by stunning natural surroundings.

Many of the hot springs are open to the public, allowing tourists to relax in the warm waters free of charge, although private facilities are also available for those seeking greater comfort. The area is surrounded by a lush forest, adding to the experience of well-being and tranquility offered by the site.

Mount Amiata

Mount Amiata was once an active volcano, but today it is considered extinct. Its landscape is marked by dense forests of chestnut, oak, and beech trees, providing a spectacular natural setting. The area is a popular destination in both winter and summer, offering a wide variety of outdoor activities.

Saturnia Baths

The Terme di Saturnia, located in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, is one of Italy’s most famous thermal areas. Known for their mineral-rich sulfurous waters, these baths have been prized since Roman times for their healing and relaxing properties. The waters spring forth at a constant temperature of 37.5°C and flow into several natural pools, creating a unique and relaxing landscape surrounded by lush vegetation.

The main attraction of the Terme di Saturnia is the Cascata del Mulino, a thermal waterfall that forms a series of small natural pools, where visitors can immerse themselves and enjoy a relaxing bath while admiring the stunning landscape. Saturnia’s waters are considered excellent for relieving stress and improving circulation.

You can come from Rome, Milan, or Florence, and in fact, most people come for a day trip, but we chose to stay overnight and enjoy this city after the mass tourism has left.

Where to start the tour?

We’ll start at Piazza del Miracoli, where all tourists go to visit the Leaning Tower.

The Piazza dei Miracoli, also known as the Piazza del Duomo, is one of Italy’s most iconic architectural complexes and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This square is home to some of the world’s most visited monuments, and the beauty of its medieval architecture is simply breathtaking.

Taking a free tour of Pisa is a very good plan to start with.

First, you can’t miss the Leaning Tower of Pisa, famous for its leaning angle. This bell tower, built between the 12th and 14th centuries, is one of Italy’s most iconic symbols. In addition to enjoying the view from the outside, we recommend climbing the tower for an incredible panoramic view of the city and the square.

Right next door is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, a prime example of Pisan Romanesque art. Its interior is equally impressive, with gilded mosaics and a wealth of artistic details that will transport you back to Pisa’s medieval past.

In front of the cathedral, you’ll see the Baptistery of St. John, a circular building notable for its size and exceptional acoustics. If you have the opportunity to hear a chant inside, you’ll be amazed at how the acoustics highlight each sound in a unique way.

Also in the square, you can enjoy the Camposanto Monumentale, an ancient monumental cemetery surrounded by walls. Here, in addition to learning about Pisa’s history through its tombs, you can see medieval and Renaissance frescoes adorning its walls, depicting scenes from the Bible and city life.

How to get tickets to go up the Leaning Tower

Admission to the cathedral is free, but you do need an entrance ticket. You have two options: if you’re planning to climb the Leaning Tower, the Baptistery, or the Cemetery, you also get a ticket to the cathedral with your visit to any of these. Otherwise, if you’re only visiting the cathedral, you’ll need to purchase the free ticket at the box office, not online.

When you purchase your ticket, you must schedule a time to climb the tower. You can visit the rest of the monuments in the square without a reservation. To climb the tower, please note that you cannot bring any type of bag or backpack. Before joining the queue at the designated time, go to the bag drop-off area and leave your bag there. Aside from the monuments, Piazza dei Miracoli is a perfect place to stroll and enjoy the unique atmosphere. You can take some time to relax in the gardens, admire the view, or simply get lost in the nearby streets, where you’ll find small souvenir shops and charming cafes.

As I mentioned earlier, we stayed one night in Pisa at B&B Antica Piazza dei Miracoli. The accommodation was very simple, an old house with on-site parking and a simple breakfast.

But I’ve told you several times that once in Pisa, you shouldn’t just go to the Piazza del Miracoli, but also explore the city a bit. We continue our tour in the heart of Pisa’s historic center. If you move away from the Piazza del Miracoli, you’ll enter a network of narrow streets full of history and charm. Pisa can be seen not only from its famous tower, but also from its vibrant streets, full of life, with cafés where you can enjoy a good espresso, or local shops offering typical artisan products.

Our steps lead us to the nearby Piazza dei Cavalieri, a beautiful square with the Clock Palace, the Carovana Palace, and the Church of St. Stephen. Pisa is also a university city; its ancient university is one of the most prestigious in Italy.

Pisa is also a city bathed by the Arno River, and the best thing to do is walk across its bridges to admire the views. One of the most picturesque is the Ponte di Mezzo, which crosses the river in the city center, connecting the two sides of Pisa. From here, you can see beautiful reflections of the historic buildings in the water, a perfect view for photos.

How to get to Pisa

Visiting it from Florence is perhaps the most popular option. Just 90 kilometers away, you can take the train, which takes about an hour to travel from Santa Maria Novella station to Pisa Centrale.

It has a rich history dating back to the medieval period. It was founded by the Etruscans, but reached its greatest importance during the Middle Ages. Today, Siena is one of the most visited cities in Italy due to its impressive, well-preserved medieval heritage. Its main tourist attractions include Piazza del Campo, home to the famous Palio di Siena, a twice-yearly horse race, and Siena Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic art. Piazza del Campo

It is one of Siena’s most iconic places and a symbol of the city. This semicircular, gently sloping square has a red brick paved surface, giving it a unique character. It is considered one of the most beautiful squares in Europe and is known for its great historical, architectural, and cultural value.

Piazza del Campo is primarily famous for hosting the Palio di Siena, one of the city’s most important festivals. The Palio is a traditional horse race held twice a year, in July and August. The race takes place in the square, which becomes a vibrant stage with thousands of spectators cheering on the riders, who represent different “contradas,” or districts of Siena. It is an event steeped in history, rivalries, and excitement, and attracts tourists from all over the world.

The square is surrounded by some of Siena’s most iconic buildings, such as the Palazzo Pubblico, the city’s former town hall, and the Torre del Mangia, a medieval tower that rises above the square. This tower, which at 102 meters high is one of the highest points in the city, offers a spectacular view of Siena and its surroundings. The Torre del Mangia was designed and built to be the same height as the tower of Siena’s Duomo, as a symbol of equality between state and church. Tickets can be purchased on-site only; groups to climb are limited, and the price is €10.

The Gaia Fountain: On the north side of the square is the Fonte Gaia, a beautiful 15th-century marble fountain. The fountain is a popular meeting point for tourists and provides a beautiful backdrop for the Piazza del Campo.

Sanctuary House of Saint Catherine

Located in the heart of Siena, the Sanctuary of the House of Saint Catherine is one of the most iconic places for those who wish to connect with Italy’s spiritual history. Built on the site of the birthplace of Saint Catherine of Siena, patron saint of Europe and Italy, this religious complex offers a unique insight into the life of one of the most influential figures in Catholicism.

The sanctuary is located on Via Costa di Sant’Antonio and is composed of various spaces that were added over the centuries. Among them are the Oratory of the Crucifix, which houses the crucifix before which Catherine received the stigmata, and the Kitchen Oratory, a simple space that preserves original elements and frescoes that evoke the saint’s daily life.

The sanctuary is accessed through the Portico of the Communards of Italy, a gallery built in 1939 to commemorate her proclamation as national patron saint. The entire complex conveys an atmosphere of contemplation and devotion, with architectural and artistic details that invite reflection.

The Sanctuary is open to the public and admission is free. We believe it’s a lovely stop for those traveling to Siena interested in art, history, and spirituality.

Leaving the sanctuary behind, our steps will take us to the Basilica of Santo Domingo, also associated with Saint Catherine.

Basilica of Santo Domingo

Perched on a hilltop, the Basilica of St. Dominic dominates the Siena skyline with its imposing Gothic architecture. Built in red brick and featuring a sober style, this 13th-century church houses one of the city’s most venerated relics: the incorrupt head of St. Catherine of Siena. More than a place of worship, it is a place steeped in history and spirituality, where time seems to stand still amidst ancient frescoes and the silent devotion of those who visit.

Fortezza Medicea

Built between 1561 and 1563 by order of Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici, its purpose was to consolidate Florentine control over Siena after the conquest of the city. Today, it serves as a public space for cultural events and recreational activities, and houses the Enoteca Italiana. The fortress is open to the public and its facilities are freely accessible.

We will begin our walk, returning, towards Plaza de Campo again, but we will pass through two plazas first.

Piazza Salimbeni and Piazza Tolomei

Located in the heart of Piazza Salimbeni, Palazzo Salimbeni stands out as one of Siena’s most elegant buildings. Its origins date back to the 14th century, although the current neo-Gothic façade was remodeled in the 19th century to harmonize with the city’s medieval aesthetic. This palace houses the headquarters of Monte dei Paschi di Siena, considered the oldest continuously operating bank in the world, founded in 1472. Although it is not possible to enter the building, its imposing presence, along with the statue of Sallustio Bandini in the center of the square, make it a must-see for history and architecture lovers.

Our steps now lead us to Piazza Tolomei. Small but steeped in history, Piazza Tolomei is one of those hidden corners that surprise you in the heart of Siena. Flanked by elegant medieval buildings, the Palazzo Tolomei stands out, considered one of the oldest private palaces in the city. Named after an influential Sienese family, this square retains the serene air of a less-traveled Siena, where the past still whispers among centuries-old stones and facades that have witnessed centuries of history.

Logia della Mercanzia

We continue onward and pass by the Loggia della Mercanzia. The Loggia della Mercanzia, in the heart of Siena, is an elegant 15th-century open gallery that reflects the commercial power of the medieval city. With its marble columns and detailed sculptures, it was a meeting point for merchants and bankers, a silent witness to Siena’s economic splendor.

Siena Cathedral

Just as we told you in Florence, visiting the Cathedral in Siena means visiting a monumental complex, which includes the cathedral, the climb to the dome, the baptistery, the Piccolomini library, the crypt, the Opera del Duomo museum, and the panoramic view with its wonderful views.

Located in the heart of Tuscany, Siena Cathedral captivates not only with its imposing Gothic façade and interior decorated with black and white marble, but also with the secret it holds within its floor. Its floor, considered one of the most extraordinary in the world, is composed of 56 sculpted and inlaid marble panels, depicting biblical scenes, allegories, and historical figures with breathtaking precision and beauty. Created between the 14th and 16th centuries by local and Florentine artists, this monumental mosaic remains covered for most of the year for protection. It is only fully uncovered for a few weeks between late June and mid-July, and then again between mid-August and October, making these moments a unique opportunity to see the narrative and artistic soul of the cathedral unfold beneath your feet.

We were lucky enough to visit it at the end of September and see it uncovered. It’s truly impressive, words can’t describe it.

We stayed in Siena for one night and loved the B&B Il Corso, super clean and just steps from Piazza del Campo. Breakfast was served in a nearby café, with great attention to detail. The room wasn’t that big, but it was perfect for one night and with small suitcases.

You can visit Siena from Florence by train, about an hour and a half from Santa Maria Novella in Florence.

If, on the other hand, you prefer a more relaxed tour, you have excursion options from Florence that connect it to San Gimignano and Pisa.

Founded in Roman times, this medieval city has witnessed transformations and has been forged at the crossroads of religious and cultural traditions. We begin our tour at the Basilica of San Francisco, a monumental complex declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

You can get there on foot from the historic center, going down Via San Francesco, the main street leading to the Basilica. Alternatively, if you arrive by train at Assisi-Santa Maria degli Angeli station, you can take bus C, which goes up to the upper part of the town and drops you off near the Basilica. You can get off at Piazza Unità di Italia. We went by car; there are four parking lots outside the walls: Porta San Giovanni, Mojano, Porta Nuova, and Piazza Mattioti.

Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi

The monumental complex consists of the upper and lower basilicas, and admission is free unless you want a guided tour. Here you can admire impressive frescoes and the saint’s tomb.

Saint Francis of Assisi was born here in 1181. He symbolized the city because he dedicated himself to the service of God, helping the poor, abandoning his family’s wealth. He is also closely associated with Saint Clare of Assisi, a spiritual disciple of Saint Francis and founder of the Poor Clares: at the age of 18, she fled her wealthy family to join Francis in the small church of Saint Mary of the Angels.

Next stop: the Basilica of Saint Clare, built immediately after her death. In the full Umbrian Gothic style, it houses important relics of the saint and of Saint Francis.

Piazza del Comune and Temple of Minerva

We thus arrived at the Town Hall Square and the Temple of Minerva. The Temple of Minerva, with its enormous columns, is one of the must-see places in Assisi. You can stay in Assisi, but we chose to visit for just the day and continue our journey to the Tuscany region, which we’ll explore in future videos.

Assisi is easily accessible. If you’re flying to Italy, Rome Airport is a popular option, from where you can take a direct train to Assisi, with a journey time of approximately two hours. The Assisi station is connected to nearby cities and offers convenient and punctual service. Once in the city, you can explore the historic center on foot. However, if you don’t want to tire yourself out, you can take the Eco Tour bus, which you can catch in Piazza del Comune for €15.

You can also visit Assisi from Florence, and for both cases, there are excursions in Spanish. If you want a more relaxed experience, this is a great option.

We arrived by car, which, as you know, we had rented to tour a large part of Italy. Upon arrival, you have to find parking since you can’t drive around the city.

Free tour of Florence

Day 1 in Florence

The walk along the banks of the Arno had us immersed in the museum that is Florence. Along the way, we visited the Galileo Museum. Although we didn’t go inside, the same thing we mentioned in Rome will happen here: there’s so much to see in every corner that we’ll be doing some things and leaving others as references. If you like science, you might be interested in this visit. Here you can see everything from Galileo’s original telescopes to inventions that changed the way we understand the world. Admission is €13.

Ponte Vecchio

The Ponte Vecchio isn’t just a bridge; it’s a piece of history suspended over the Arno River. Built in the 14th century to replace an earlier structure swept away by a flood, it has witnessed centuries of commerce and tradition. Originally, butchers and tanners occupied its stalls, but the Medici, in their eagerness to beautify Florence—either for the smell or for safety (there are various versions)—replaced them with jewelers, giving it that golden glow that still characterizes it today. It was the only bridge in the city to survive World War II. Walking across it is like traversing centuries of history in just a few meters, feeling the weight of the past in every cobblestone. And if you wait until sunset, you’ll see how the light transforms it into a golden postcard, as if it still held part of the Medici treasure.

Piazza della Signoria

Piazza della Signoria is the political and cultural heart of Florence, a monumental square steeped in history and art. Since the Middle Ages, it has been the center of power, dominated by the imposing Palazzo Vecchio, the seat of the Florentine government. Revolts, executions, and celebrations have taken place here over the centuries.

In addition to its historical significance, the square is an open-air museum, featuring iconic sculptures such as a replica of Michelangelo’s David, the Fountain of Neptune, and the Loggia dei Lanzi, which houses stunning works of art. It’s a vibrant place where Florence’s past and present meet at every turn.

We would leave the Palazzo Vecchio for another visit on another day, as we would now head towards the Galleria della Accademia in search of it.

But you can’t miss the Duomo, its bell tower, and the baptistery on this walk. It leaves you speechless when you see it. We’d save our visit to the Duomo, the Cathedral of Santa Maria dei Fiori, for early tomorrow morning, because it’s best to go early to avoid the crowds, as we were going to climb the dome..

Accademia Gallery

Today was a day to continue immersing ourselves in the art of Florence, and the Galleria della Accademia was the starting point for the day.

We chose a guided tour so we wouldn’t miss any details of Michelangelo’s David on display in this museum.

We don’t do all the guided tours of museums or galleries, but on some occasions we feel it’s necessary because of the information the guide provides, and in this case we feel that’s the case.

The Gallery’s birth dates back to 1784, when the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Pietro Leopoldo, reorganized the Academy of Fine Arts of Design, founded in 1563 by Cosimo I de’ Medici, turning it into the modern Academy of Fine Arts.

The museum also houses other works by Michelangelo as well as various works by other Florentine artists from the 14th to the 16th century.

Michelangelo’s David is one of the most iconic sculptures of the Renaissance. Carved in marble between 1501 and 1504, it depicts the biblical hero David before facing Goliath. Standing over 5 meters tall, it stands out for its detailed anatomical study, its expression of concentration, and the perfection of its proportions. Originally conceived for Florence Cathedral, its artistic impact led to its placement in the Piazza della Signoria. In 1873, it was moved to the Accademia Gallery, where it is now the museum’s main attraction. Today, a replica, which we recently saw, hangs in the Piazza della Signoria.

Porcellino Market

We passed by the Porcellino Market. One of the liveliest corners of Florence is the Porcellino Market, famous for its leather and souvenir stalls as well as the iconic bronze boar fountain. According to tradition, if you rub its snout and drop a coin into its mouth, you’ll return to Florence. This market, located under an elegant Renaissance loggia, is perfect for finding unique souvenirs and soaking up the city’s vibrant atmosphere.

Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens

We crossed the Arno River in search of a palace. For this first day, we chose to visit the Palazzo Pitti Gardens and the Boboli Gardens. We could have scheduled this visit before the Galleria della Accademia to perhaps reduce the walking, but it was a matter of ticket times. You can arrange that based on your accommodations and the tour times.

The Palazzo Pitti is much more than a palace: it is a reflection of the power and grandeur of those who ruled Florence. Built in the 15th century for the wealthy Pitti family, it passed into the hands of the Medici, who made it their ducal residence, filling it with art, luxury, and the secrets of the Renaissance court. It soon became the new symbol of Medici power over Tuscany. It also housed the courts of two other dynasties: the House of Habsburg-Lorraine (which succeeded the Medici from 1737) and the kings of Italy of the House of Savoy, who lived there from 1865.

But the real gem is at the rear: the Boboli Gardens. More than just gardens, they are a universe of fountains, grottoes, and classical sculptures, designed to impress as much as the palace itself. Free tour of Florence

This tour we chose doesn’t cover essential Florence, with its Duomo or Palazzo Vecchio, unlike the morning tour or others. We’ll leave that for tomorrow, and today we’ll explore the cobblestone streets of the Oltrarno, on the other side of the Arno, while being told something about Florence’s history. It lasts about two and a half hours, so we’ll finish at night. Book the tour we took, “Florence Sunset Tour.”

We’ll start today with the Duomo of Florence!!

Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore

Let’s start by saying that if you only want to enter the Duomo, admission is free, but if you want to go up to the dome, enter the Baptistery, or climb the Campanile, there is a fee.

You have three different passes, all valid for three days, so you can divide your visits among your days. Tip: The climbs to the dome and the campanile are via stairs; spreading them out may make it less tiring.

The three passes are: Bruneleschi Pass – Giotto Pass and Ghiberti Pass. They all include different things. The prices, Ghiberti Pass € 15, Giotto Pass € 20 and the one we bought Bruneleschi Pass € 30 and that gives you access to the dome, the campanile, Santa Maria Reparata, the baptistery and the Duomo museum, I would say that all are a must in Florence, Official website Duomo Florence

When you purchase your pass, you must select a time slot for the dome only, and the pass is valid for three days from that day. You can also visit other included attractions on the same day prior to your chosen time to climb the dome.

Today we will visit the Duomo, climb its dome, and enter the Baptistery, leaving the climb to the campanile and the museum for tomorrow.

Florence Cathedral and Santa Maria Reparata

The unmistakable silhouette of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, or the Duomo, dominates the Florence skyline. But beyond its marble façade in shades of white, green, and pink, lies centuries of history.

You can also visit it on a guided tour of the Cathedral with a climb to the dome.

What many don’t know is that beneath the cathedral lie the remains of Santa Maria Reparata, the original church upon which the current cathedral was built. Descending to this part is like taking a trip back in time, among ancient mosaics and vestiges that tell the hidden history of Florence.

But the star experience is the climb to the dome. It takes more than 450 steps through narrow passageways, between frescoes of the Last Judgment and the dome’s internal structure, to reach one of the best views of the city. The reward is worth every step: Florence at your feet with the Ponte Vecchio, the Arno River, and the red roofs stretching to the Tuscan hills.

Baptistery of San Giovanni

Going down a few steps we will find the Baptistery.

Just across from the Duomo, the Baptistery of San Giovanni is one of the oldest buildings in Florence, with over a thousand years of history. Its octagonal design, clad in white and green marble, served as inspiration for many Renaissance buildings. But what truly makes it special is inside: a stunning golden mosaic ceiling depicting scenes from the Last Judgment, with a monumental image of Christ at its center.

And, of course, we can’t talk about the Baptistery without mentioning its famous Gates of Paradise. Designed by Lorenzo Ghiberti, these bronze doors are not only a masterpiece of Renaissance art, but also marked the beginning of a new era in the history of art.

It’s worth noting that the ones seen today in the Baptistery are replicas. Ghiberti’s original Gates of Paradise, after centuries of exposure to weather and pollution, were removed for conservation and are now housed in the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, a museum included in the pass but which we’ll visit tomorrow.

Basilica of San Lorenzo

The Basilica of San Lorenzo is one of Florence’s oldest and most iconic churches. Its current construction, begun in 1422, was commissioned by the Medici family to architect Filippo Brunelleschi.

Inside, the basilica houses the Old Sacristy, designed by Brunelleschi, and the New Sacristy, the work of Michelangelo. It is also the resting place of prominent members of the Medici family, highlighting its historical and artistic importance. Admission is €9.

We continue the lively walk, less than 200 meters separate us.

Florence Central Market

We’ll soon arrive at the Central Market, or San Lorenzo Market. It’s a leather goods market that captivates and entertains us before we even enter.

Located in the heart of the San Lorenzo neighborhood, Florence’s Central Market is an explosion of colors, aromas, and flavors that captivates locals and travelers alike. This iconic market, built in 1874 with an iron and glass structure reminiscent of the Parisian markets of the time, remains the culinary soul of the city.

Basilica of Santa Maria Novella

Located facing the square of the same name, the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella is one of Florence’s architectural gems and a landmark for travelers and locals alike. Its stunning white and green marble façade, designed by Leon Battista Alberti, marks the transition between the Gothic and Renaissance styles. Inside, the church houses masterpieces such as Masaccio’s fresco of The Trinity, one of the earliest depictions in mathematical perspective, and Domenico Ghirlandaio’s vibrant frescoes in the Tornabuoni Chapel.

More than just a church, Santa Maria Novella has been a center of innovation, from its famous pharmacy, founded by Dominican monks in the 13th century, to its role in the development of art and science in Florence. Today, it remains a must-see for those seeking to immerse themselves in the history and beauty of the Renaissance.

Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy

The Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy, founded by Dominican monks in the 13th century, is one of the oldest and most prestigious pharmacies in Europe. Located in the convent of the same name, this historic apothecary began as a place where the monks made medicinal products from herbs grown in their own garden. Over time, the pharmacy diversified and began offering a wide range of cosmetics, perfumes, and elixirs, always maintaining a focus on quality and the use of natural ingredients.

The visit is free and I recommend it. The queue moved quite quickly so it was a good idea..

We ended the day with a lovely walk, continuing towards Piazza della Repubblica, passing by Palazzo Strossi and many other places that appear on walks through Florence.

A walk along the Arno will take us to the Deggli Ufizzi Gallery.

Famous worldwide for its excellent collections of ancient sculptures and paintings (from the Middle Ages to the modern era), the Galleria deggli Ufizzi is one of the museums to visit on a visit to Florence.

If you’re an art lover, this is heaven. Here you’ll find some of the most impressive Renaissance works by Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo, and others. Built in the late 13th century as the seat of city government, its imposing stone structure and distinctive 94-meter-high Arnolfo Tower dominate the cityscape. Over the centuries, it has witnessed significant political transformations, transforming from the center of Republican power to the residence of the Medici family.

Inside, you can admire magnificent halls decorated with frescoes and Renaissance works of art, such as the Salone del Cinquecento, where Vasari captured his talent in stunning paintings chronicling the history of Florence. The palace also hides secret passages and private rooms that reveal the lives of the Florentine elite. Admission is €12.50, but if you’re not going to get one to enter, I still encourage you to stop by and see the hall.

We would return to the Piazza del Duomo to visit what we missed yesterday, starting with the Campanile.

Giotto’s Campanile

Giotto’s Campanile is one of Florence’s most iconic structures and a sublime example of Italian Gothic architecture. Located next to the majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, this slender bell tower rises 84 meters above the Piazza del Duomo, offering a privileged view of the city and Brunelleschi’s iconic dome.

Designed by Giotto in 1334, the Campanile was conceived not only as a bell tower but also as a work of art in its own right. Its façade, clad in white, green, and pink marble, follows the same aesthetic as the Duomo, creating an unmistakable visual harmony. Although Giotto died in 1337, his legacy was continued by Andrea Pisano and later by Francesco Talenti, who completed the structure in 1359, respecting the original design but adding his own touch by crowning the tower without a spire, making it even more distinctive.

For travelers brave the climb, the 414 steps offer an unparalleled panoramic view of Florence, with its reddish rooftops, the Arno River, and the Tuscan hills on the horizon. Unlike Brunelleschi’s dome, the climb to the Campanile allows you to admire the cathedral from a unique perspective, without the crowds that often characterize other viewpoints in the city.

After descending, we’ll take a few steps to the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo. Both the Campanile and this museum, as we mentioned, are included in the Brunelleschi Pass.

Museum of the Opera del Duomo

Located just steps from the imposing Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo is a must-see for those wishing to delve deeper into the history and art of Florence. Often overshadowed by the cathedral, its campanile, and Brunelleschi’s dome, this museum houses a collection of masterpieces that provide an insight into the evolution of one of the world’s most important architectural complexes.

Founded in 1891, the museum was created to preserve and exhibit the sculptures, reliefs, and decorative elements that originally formed part of the cathedral, the Baptistery, and Giotto’s Campanile. Over the years, its collection has grown to become one of the most important collections of Italian sacred art.

The Baptistery’s impressive original doors are particularly noteworthy, including Lorenzo Ghiberti’s celebrated Gates of Paradise, whose detailed biblical scenes continue to astonish with their refinement and realism..

Basilica of Santa Croce

Our steps will begin to approach the Arno again, so we would visit Santa Croce and the Dante Alighieri monument 1,400 km away on the way.

Santa Croce, in the heart of Florence, is much more than a church: it is a mausoleum of geniuses. Its Gothic walls enclose the tombs of Michelangelo, Galileo, and Machiavelli, while its frescoes by Giotto tell sacred stories with timeless beauty. In front of its neo-Gothic façade, the statue of Dante Alighieri overlooks the square, recalling his literary legacy. Known as the “Pantheon of Italian Glories,” this basilica is a testament to art, history, and spirituality in the cradle of the Renaissance. General admission costs €8.

And now, let’s cross the Arno, the Alle Grazie Bridge, and we’ll head to the best viewpoint in Florence, Piazzale Michelangelo. We’ll walk about 2 kilometers.

We decided to walk, in fact we didn’t use public transportation during either day.

The walk was a little long but nice, and we arrived at this piazza, which is a meeting place for tourists who come to see the city from above.

It doesn’t disappoint at all; the view is wonderful! This would be a great place to end or begin a visit, as it offers a perfect panorama of Florence from a distance.

Further away from the Basilica of San Miniato and located in the hills just a few kilometers from the city, Fiesole is an ideal destination for those seeking panoramic views of Florence and a more tranquil atmosphere.

Our accommodation, Le Stanze dei Ghibellini, was very well located and spacious, but while very clean, it was run down and in need of renovation. The service was warm, the first floor was via stairs, and the breakfast was very simple. However, prices in Florence are high, and getting a good location at a reasonably priced price is difficult, so we didn’t complain. We were within walking distance of the Arno River and the Alle Grazie Bridge, and the hostess was very welcoming.

It has the advantage of having an agreement with a parking lot very close by, half a block away, which despite being super full, they make a space for you if you go on behalf of the accommodation and the parking lot itself manages to enter your license plate number after you arrive since it is within a ZTL zone and you cannot enter without getting a fine. In any case, be very careful because, in addition to limited traffic, there are exclusive lanes for public transport. Don’t use them because you’ll definitely get a fine. As for how to get around the city. Walking is the best way to get around, as most attractions are close to each other and many downtown streets are pedestrian-only. We did everything on foot.

They have buses and trams: city buses can be useful if you are staying outside the center. There is also a tram line connecting Santa Maria Novella station with some outlying areas. You can buy tickets at vending machines or through the TABNET app. The ticket price is €1.50 or €2.50 if you buy it upstairs.

Arrival in Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre is a group of five coastal villages located in the Liguria region of northwestern Italy. They are spread out between the cities of La Spezia and Levanto. The five villages—Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore—are built on cliffs overlooking the Ligurian Sea and are renowned for their colorful houses, scenic trails, and authenticity.

We have three ways to get there, by boat, train or car.

Arrival by ferry

To reach Cinque Terre by boat, the best option is to use the tourist ferries that operate in the area, especially in high season (spring and summer).

Although we have other places from which to plan the trip, such as Levanto or Portovenere, we will focus on La Spezia as it is a convenient base.

There are regular ferries leaving from the port of La Spezia and connecting with the Cinque Terre villages, except Corniglia (which has no port). It is an ideal option to enjoy the panoramic view of the coast.

Ferries generally operate from April to October (depending on the weather). Website with information about ferries in Cinque Terre.

You can buy tickets for individual journeys or a day pass to get on and off in the villages.

If the sea is rough, the boats can cancel their departures.

It is a spectacular way to get there because it allows you to see the five villages from the sea, something that cannot be done by train or car.

The cons would be the season, since as we said they do not operate on all dates, the cost, since it is higher, about 41 euros for a ticket to use for the day, and the transfer time, since it will take between 1 and 2 hours depending on the type of boat.

Arrival by train

The journey time between La Spezia and Monterroso is between 18 and 25 minutes. The cost of a single ticket is between 5 and 10 euros depending on the season, or a 24-hour ticket for hopping on and off between towns costs between 19.50 and 32.50 €, also depending on the season.

Arrival by car

And the last one is by car, the least common of all and the one we chose. We went in mid-September and did it in a rented car through Discovecars.

We decided to drive to the Vernazza parking lot, which was where we were going to stay, Vernassoa, the cost was €20 per day, you make your reservation by phone and once you arrive you leave the car and they take you in a transfer to the city, then when you return you call half an hour in advance and they come to pick you up. But if I tell you to pay attention, the route to get there is very winding, there is not much traffic but it is as I said it has sharp curves. So it’s an option to think about a lot.

Tour of the Cinque Terre

As we said, the villages are Monterroso al mare, Vernazza (where we had the accommodation), Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore.

The train to move between them is fast, although as we said you can also do it on the ferry, with the latter option having the views.

Monterosso al Mare: A Charm in the Cinque Terre

Monterosso al Mare, the largest and most accessible village in Cinque Terre, is a place where history, nature and gastronomy combine in perfect harmony. Located in a beautiful valley surrounded by hills covered with vineyards and olive groves, Monterosso has a fascinating history dating back to medieval times. Its vibrantly coloured houses look out over the turquoise waters of the Ligurian Sea, creating a picture-perfect picture postcard.

This picturesque village is divided into two parts: the historic center, with its narrow streets and its church of San Giovanni Battista, and Fegina famous for its beautiful beach. Monterosso Beach is the largest beach in the Cinque Terre and an ideal place to relax and enjoy the sun, especially after walking the trails that connect the villages. From there, you can admire the famous “Gigante”, a huge statue of Neptune that looks out over the sea.

As for food, Monterosso al Mare is a paradise for lovers of seafood and local flavors. Here you can enjoy delicacies such as focaccia (flatbread with olive oil), pasta al pesto (sauce made with fresh basil, pine nuts, garlic and olive oil, typical of the Liguria region), and the famous fritto misto (fried fish and seafood). It is also highly recommended to try the anchovies of Monterosso, a dish that stands out for the freshness of the local fish.

The good thing about staying in this area is that you can return to each place as many times as you want, you are just a few minutes away, so now we would say goodbye to return the next day but doing one of the trekking trails, we will talk about that later.

Vernazza: The Heart of the Cinque Terre

Vernazza is one of the most picturesque villages in Cinque Terre and certainly one of the most photographed. Its charm lies in its unspoiled beauty, its narrow alleys and its natural harbour, which has been the heart of local life for centuries. Arriving in Vernazza, it is easy to understand why this place has captivated travellers and artists throughout history. The deep blue sea blends perfectly with the vibrantly coloured houses clinging to the rocks, creating a picture that seems straight out of a painting.

The centre of Vernazza is a labyrinth of cobbled streets and cosy squares, where life goes on at a leisurely pace. The Doria Castle, with its watchtower, offers spectacular views of the town and the surrounding coast. In addition, the church of Santa Margarita de Antiochia, with its bell tower jutting out over the sea, is one of the most representative symbols of the town.

On a gastronomic level, Vernazza is a paradise for lovers of Mediterranean flavours. As in other villages in the Cinque Terre, fresh seafood is the protagonist. Here you can’t miss a plate of pasta with pesto accompanied by a fritto misto.

Our accommodation in Vernazza: Vintage Room The accommodation had a very good location, in the middle of the main street of the village, a very good attention from the host, but nothing more. A very, very steep staircase, so be careful if you choose it, it was spacious, not so the bathroom.

If there is one thing that defines Vernazza, it is the feeling of being in a place where time seems to have stopped, a perfect spot to enjoy the tranquility, the gastronomy and the panoramic views of the Mediterranean. We loved choosing it as a base for the tour, we talk about the accommodation at the end of the video along with places for dinner and other recommendations.

Corniglia: The Hidden Jewel of Cinque Terre

Corniglia is the smallest village in the Cinque Terre and often the least visited, which gives it a special charm. Situated on a hill, 100 metres above sea level, Corniglia offers some of the most breathtaking views in the entire region. From here, you can admire the Ligurian Sea stretching out to the horizon and the cultivated terraces of vineyards that spread across the hillsides. Its elevated location, unlike the other villages in the Cinque Terre, gives it a unique tranquillity, far from the bustle of the coast.

When you get off at Corniglia station you still have a long way to go up to the village. With the same train pass you can wait at the bus stop which is a few steps away and with the same train pass you can take the bus, with which you will arrive quickly and without getting tired to the village.

Arriving in Corniglia, you will be struck by the contrast between the natural beauty and the relaxed atmosphere of the village. The narrow cobbled streets invite you to lose yourself in its labyrinth and discover its most charming corners. One of the most distinctive features of Corniglia is its church of St. Peter, dating back to the 14th century and located in a panoramic square. In addition, the Terrazza del Miradouro, an observation point from which you can see the entire coast, is one of the most outstanding places to enjoy the view.

We retraced our steps thinking of returning to Corniglia when the weather was better.

We would leave Manarola and Riomaggiore for the next day, there was no hurry, it was two days of rest in these five magical lands.

Riomaggiore: The Soul of the Cinque Terre

Riomaggiore is, without a doubt, one of the most vibrant and authentic villages in Cinque Terre. Located in a deep valley, with its brightly coloured houses stacked on the mountainsides, it offers a spectacular view that captivates those who visit it. It is the first village in Cinque Terre to be found to the south, and its port, together with its terraced layout, makes every corner look like a moving painting, especially at sunset, when the sunlight illuminates the facades of its houses.

The historic centre of Riomaggiore is made up of narrow, steep streets, surrounded by houses that seem to embrace the mountains. At the heart of the village is the church of San Giovanni Battista, a building dating back to the 14th century, which stands out for its simple but impressive architecture. Furthermore, the Castle of Riomaggiore, situated on top of a hill, offers unrivalled views of the village and the sea, an ideal place to enjoy the landscape or to photograph the enchanting surroundings.

A breakfast to enjoy the village was the option we chose.

Riomaggiore, with its picturesque atmosphere, vibrant local life and delicious cuisine, is the ideal place to immerse yourself in the authentic essence of Cinque Terre. A village where every corner tells a story and where natural beauty and culture merge in a unique way.

Via dell’Amore

One of the main attractions of Riomaggiore is the famous Via dell’Amore trail, which connects this village to Manarola and has become one of the most iconic routes in Cinque Terre. This easy-to-follow coastal path offers stunning views of the cliffs and the sea, with strategic stops to capture the beauty of the landscape. And this is the way we chose to reach Manarola.

Pay attention here, advice! There are several routes that can be done in the Cinque Terre, at the end we will leave the list of all but now we are going to highlight the Via del Amore, perhaps the most famous, the least difficult, not difficult at all, 1 kilometer long, recently reopened and I recommend it because it is beautiful!

But like many others, it has a fee. You have to have the Cinque Terre Card which is the pass that gives you access to transport and the rest of the trails + €10 and reserve the time for access.

At the entrance to the trail you will be asked for the supplement with the reservation of the time slot + the Cinque Terre Card. The trecking card + the supplement is also useful. The system is strange, I saw people who wanted to do only the trail and not to have a train pass so they were left without doing it, I leave the website in case that changes at some point. But I clarify this, it is one of the most beautiful walks in Cinque Terre and without any difficulty as you can see in the images. Between these views you get to

Manarola: The Charm of the Cinque Terre

Manarola is one of the most iconic and charming villages in Cinque Terre, famous for its colorful houses that cling to the steep rocks, with stunning views of the Ligurian Sea. This picturesque village, with its narrow cobbled streets and small squares, offers a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for getting lost and enjoying the natural beauty that surrounds it. Founded in Roman times, Manarola has an ancient air that blends harmoniously with the modernity of its inhabitants and the traditions of the region.

This is another of the options I had in mind to stay.

Manarola’s harbour is one of the village’s highlights. Often considered one of the most photogenic in Cinque Terre, this small fishing port is where the vibrant colours of the houses are reflected in the crystal-clear waters. Here, visitors can relax by the water, watch the fishermen return with their catch of the day, or simply enjoy the view as they gaze out over the horizon.

In gastronomic terms, Manarola is known for its fresh and simple flavors, typical of the Liguria region. A very famous bar on social media is Nessun Dorma with wonderful views towards the port of Manarola.

We returned to Vernazza by train, partly to rest and partly because we wanted to do another trail. We would do the trekking to Monterroso, it says, of medium difficulty, 3.5 kilometres, an hour and a half long, we put two hours. The entrance fee is included in the transport card.

We arrived in Monterroso in the afternoon, a little tour of the town again, a stop for a beer and to take the train to Vernazza.

As you can see, two days fly by, don’t even think about doing it just for the day in our opinion, in fact on our previous visit we did it that way and we had promised to return to stay.

Where are the Ferrari museums?

In the Emilia Romagna region, in the province of Modena, in the cities of Modena and Maranello in northern Italy.

How many museums are there?

Two, Ferrari Modena and Ferrari Maranello, can be visited on the same day if desired, there is transportation between them.

But if I also want to drive a Ferrari, can I do so? Yes, from the city of Maranello. Now that we have settled in, let’s start with the information for this one-day visit.

Ferrari Museum in Modena: A Journey into the History of the Prancing Horse

The Enzo Ferrari Museum in Modena is more than a museum, it is a tribute to the history and passion of Ferrari.

This museum not only exhibits cars, but also tells the story of Enzo Ferrari, the man behind the brand. In fact, it is built in his birthplace, next to a modern yellow pavilion inspired by the hood of a Ferrari.

What to see in the Museum:

• Iconic Cars: From historic models to modern prototypes and supercars.
• Screening Room: An exciting short film about the life of Enzo Ferrari.
• Engines and Technology: Exhibitions of legendary engines and the evolution of Ferrari in Formula 1.
• Temporary Exhibitions: Themes that change, showing unique models and collector’s pieces.

It is in Modena, about 20 minutes from Bologna by train.
It is also good to know that there is a bus that connects the train station of Modena with both museums with a schedule in the morning and in the afternoon.

For those who come by car, there is free parking inside the museum’s esplanade. Before arriving there are several paid parking lots and right in front there is one that looks like it belongs to the museum but it doesn’t. Continue until you enter the museum.

The price of admission to the Ferrari Modena museum depends on the season and is somewhat higher in the months of June, July and August. There is also a combined ticket with the Maranello Museum if you want to save something, we don’t get them together so we get each one individually.

Ferrari Museum in Maranello: The Mecca of Prancing Horse Lovers

With this museum we enter the heart of Ferrari. The Ferrari Museum in Maranello, located next to the legendary Ferrari factory, is a must-see destination for those who love speed, history and automotive innovation.

This museum not only displays impressive cars, but is a tribute to Ferrari’s history in Formula 1, racing and supercars. Here you can feel the spirit of competition and Italian excellence.

What to see in the Museum:

• Formula 1 cars: From the first single-seaters to the most modern, including those that led Ferrari to glory on the circuit.
• Iconic Models: Legendary supercars such as the Ferrari F40, LaFerrari and special editions.
• Formula 1 Simulator: To experience the adrenaline of driving a Ferrari on a professional circuit. This has a separate cost that you pay right there.

You can go, as we said, from the Modena train station on the bus that leaves at specific times, but the good thing is that the tickets to the museums only indicate the day but do not have a schedule, so by combining the train and the bus you will then have freedom of movement in the museums. Advice: check the bus schedule carefully if you are going to do it that way.

If you go by car in this museum they have a large esplanade to park but if it is paid, you pay at the machines like any parking lot on the street.

Do both Ferrari museums?

I advise if you are Ferrari lovers to do both, they have different approach, on our previous visit we had only done the one in Modena, but the complete experience visiting Maranello in our opinion is better, remember that we will always give points of view according to our tastes. But if I had to choose just one, it would perhaps be Maranello. Ferrari Museums Website

Test Drive in Maranello

But full experience would be if after seeing these cars we can drive one, right?

While there are other test drives in the area, we chose the Test Drive I love Maranello.

The ride lasts 10 minutes through the streets of Maranello and you are accompanied by an instructor in English or Italian, although the one assigned to us spoke Spanish. They were all super friendly in helping us and explaining what it consisted of.

Although we had already tried this experience in Paris, this one was superior.

The Ferrari models they have for this activity are the 458 Italia, the Portofino or the 488 Spider. I leave here the option of Ferrari Driving in Maranello so that you can check current prices.

They have time, because you have to present documents and a driving license and they have to give you the explanations before getting into the car. They need an international driving licence if they are from outside the European Union.

We made the visits in this order, first the museums of Modena and Maranello and as a final touch the driving of the car, I think it was a success.
