In the heart of Córdoba’s Sierras Grandes, amidst stone paths, pine aromas, and alpine-style cottages, lies a hidden treasure: La Cumbrecita. This small, pedestrian-only town is much more than a tourist destination. It’s an experience. A place where time slows down, the air feels cleaner, and the landscapes look like something out of a fairy tale.

We visited La Cumbrecita for the day from Villa General Belgrano… and ended up falling in love with its essence. We hiked, ate, got lost on trails, and discovered seemingly secret corners. I’ll tell you everything, step by step.

How to get to La Cumbrecita and what is the best time to go

Getting to La Cumbrecita is already part of the journey. It’s located about 118 km from the city of Córdoba and just over 35 km from Villa General Belgrano. The final access is a winding mountain road, mostly paved, but which requires you to drive slowly and enjoy the scenery. Before arriving, there’s a checkpoint: you’ll be asked to park outside the town, as La Cumbrecita is 100% pedestrian-only. That’s where the real charm begins.

Upon arrival you must leave the vehicle in a parking lot, the price is 10,000 ARS (about 8 dollars) in cash, if you are going to pay by card, the tourist office has the post for payment.

Taking a trip to Villa General Belgrano and La Cumbrecita from Córdoba is also a very good idea.

The route to VGB and La Cumbrecita can also be done by renting a car in the city of Córdoba.

The best time to visit depends on the type of experience you want:

Spring and summer: ideal for hiking, river bathing, and green landscapes. The temperatures are pleasant and the days are long.

Autumn: The forests are tinged with golden, ochre, and reddish hues. Fewer people and more tranquility.

Winter: If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of snow. The white roofs give it an irresistible European feel, but be prepared for the cold.

Recommendation: wear good shoes, sunscreen, some warm clothing (even if it’s summer), and a desire to walk.

You can download a map at the tourist office, where you’ll find a detailed itinerary with all the interesting things to see. But if you want to get ahead, I’ll leave the map for you to download and take with you on your phones.

DOWNLOAD MAP OF LA CUMBRECITA

Central European architecture and a mountain history

Ecumenical Chapel of Cumbrecita

Founded in 1934 by German immigrants, it has preserved its Alpine-style architecture, creating a unique environment where nature and culture intertwine. This charming place is known for its commitment to a quiet and relaxed lifestyle, free of motorized vehicles, making it a haven for those seeking a break from the hustle and bustle of big cities.

Located 1,400 meters above sea level, La Cumbrecita is surrounded by a landscape of native forests, mountains, and crystal-clear streams. The trails that crisscross the town invite you to hike, explore the region’s flora and fauna, and enjoy panoramic views.

Fairytale-like trails: waterfalls, forests, and the Río del Medio

La Cumbrecita isn’t explored by car. It’s explored on foot. And that’s the best way to get to know it. As soon as you cross the entrance, the sound of cars disappears. It’s replaced by the murmur of the river, the birdsong, and your own footsteps on the earth.

The trails are numerous and well-marked. You can travel from the center to the most remote areas in a matter of minutes… or get lost for hours on the forest paths.

Among the must-sees are:

La Cascada Grande: a waterfall about 14 meters high, surrounded by rocks and vegetation. Access is via a moderately difficult hike. It requires some effort, but it’s worth it.

Río del Medio: runs through the entire town. In several sections, there are smooth stones where you can sit and rest or simply dip your feet in the water.

Cerro Wank: If you’re looking for a more challenging hike, this is the option. From the summit, there are spectacular views of the entire valley.

La Olla and other natural pools you can’t miss

La Olla is one of the most famous spots in La Cumbrecita. It’s a natural pool formed by the Río del Medio. The water cascades down a small waterfall and forms a deep pool surrounded by rocks where people can swim, sunbathe, and simply enjoy.

We really liked natural places like La Olla, which has a hypnotic quality: the sound of the water, the fresh air, the children jumping off the rocks… a picture that stays with you.

Duck Lake and Trout Lake: calm, beauty, and relaxation

Along the route through La Cumbrecita, there are spots that seem designed for relaxation. Two of these spots are Duck Lake and Trout Lake (many confuse the two, but they are different).

These are bodies of water surrounded by vegetation, with wooden benches and ducks swimming peacefully. They’re ideal for sitting and resting after a good walk, or for a break with your partner or family.

Eating at La Cumbrecita: mountain flavors between empanadas and chivito

After all that walking, the reward comes: good food. And LaCumbrecita delivers in spades. The cuisine combines regional dishes, Central European cuisine, and Cordoban delicacies.

We ate at a restaurant at the entrance, before crossing into the pedestrian zone, Sabores Argentinos. We ordered chivito and empanadas, and they were delicious. The chivito was tender and well-seasoned; the empanadas were freshly made with homemade dough.

In addition to the classic chivito, there are many options for all tastes:

Goulash with spaetzle: a traditional German recipe that many restaurants masterfully prepare.

Apple strudel: ideal as a dessert or to accompany coffee.

Craft beers: There’s no shortage of fresh, full-bodied local beers.

Vegetarian and vegan options: increasingly present, especially in newer restaurants.

The service is generally warm and relaxed. No rush. You eat in your own time, gazing at the scenery and enjoying the moment.

Information for your trip

Hotels in La Cumbrecita

Throughout our tour of Argentina, we were connected with Holafly eSIMs. In this case, we used the Argentina eSIM, but if you’re traveling to several countries within the continent, you can choose the America eSIM and you’ll have coverage in all of them.

We went with travel assistance. As I always say, you should travel with travel insurance. I’ll leave the two companies we used so you can compare. Iati Seguros, with a wide range of options, and Go Assistance, on the other. complete assistance to the traveler
