Nestled in the mountains of Córdoba, Argentina, this city is nestled among German-style cottages, bars serving craft beer, and beautiful, peaceful surroundings. Welcome to Villa General Belgrano!

Located 90 kilometers from the city of Córdoba, or about 800 km from Buenos Aires, this city with a European feel is an excellent plan for a weekend getaway.

This picturesque town, where German immigrants settled years ago, surprises with its Alpine architecture, its craft beers, and its traditional festivals like the National Beer Festival.

Surrounded by nature, trails, and streams, it’s the ideal place to relax, savor Central European cuisine, and enjoy the mountain charm at any time of year.

Location of Villa General Belgrano

First, let’s get our bearings. Where is Villa General Belgrano? As we mentioned, it’s in Argentina, in the province of Córdoba, in the department of Calamuchita.

Both Villa General Belgrano and La Cumbrecita are ideal for a day trip from Córdoba City. Here’s one option: a tour of Villa General Belgrano and La Cumbrecita.

You can also get to Villa General Belgrano by renting a car in the city of Córdoba if you’re vacationing there without one.

Although it is one of those places where it is best to get lost in its streets, we will see some places to visit.

As we walk along its main street, Julio Argentino Roca Avenue, we’ll learn a little about its history, its traditional festivals, and nearby getaways.

We chose to spend two days here, one day to relax in the village, and the other to explore the pedestrian-only town of La Cumbrecita.

A little bit of the history of Villa General Belgrano

Called El Sauce, it was originally a Comechingones settlement, then later witnessed the presence of Jesuits and Creoles. Over time, immigrants began to arrive, and the town took the name Villa Calamuchita.

After 1936, German, Swiss, Italian, and Austrian immigrants arrived and settled in the town, all of whom left a tangible legacy, from their buildings to their cuisine and customs.

In 1940, Villa General Belgrano experienced significant development with the arrival of sailors from the battleship “Graf Spee,” who began working alongside the locals to build this town, which became one of the most important tourist centers in the province of Córdoba. Its current name, in honor of General Manuel Belgrano, dates back to 1943.

What to see in the village

Our accommodation was a complex, Blackstone Apartments, very spacious and comfortable apartments that were also very central, so it was a nice walk to explore the entire shopping center.

The complex has a pool and a restaurant, a very good one, which we enjoyed on our second night as we were too tired to go for a walk.

This location was ideal for a leisurely start to explore Villa General Belgrano, enjoying every corner. We began walking along Avenida San Martín, the heart of the town, where we began to feel the Central European atmosphere that makes it so special. It’s striking that all the shop signs are made of wood, which adds even more charm.

Just a few steps away, we find Plaza José Hernández, the most traditional meeting point and a good place to take photos.

For years, Plaza José Hernández was the site where Oktoberfest was held. From here, a tourist train, the Dorf tour, departs, offering a 45-minute tour of the town, at a cost of 12,000 ARS (approximately 10 USD).

Within walking distance, we can visit the Historical Museum and Cultural Center, which houses the town’s historical and cultural heritage.

Further ahead is the Clock Tower, which offers a panoramic view of the town if you dare to climb it. And if you enjoy sweet or savory dishes with a history, stopping at the typical shops selling cold cuts, artisanal chocolates, and local beers is a great idea. Everything is within walking distance.

Throughout our tour of Argentina, we were connected with Holafly eSIMs. In this case, we used the Argentina eSIM, but if you’re traveling to several countries within the continent, you can choose the America eSIM and you’ll have coverage in all of them.

We went with travel assistance. As I always say, you should travel with travel insurance. I’ll leave the two companies we used so you can compare. Iati Seguros, with a wide range of options, and Go Assistance, on the other. comprehensive assistance to travelers.

What else to see in VGB?

Very close by, just half a block from Roca Avenue, is the Villa General Belgrano Cultural Fair, which opens its doors on holidays to sell authentic handcrafted products.

From there, we continued walking a few blocks to Paseo de los Arroyos, a charming path between trees and wooden bridges that borders El Sauce Creek. It’s perfect for a relaxing stroll or sipping mate in the sun. I truly loved this relaxing walk, as well as the covered bridge.

Very close by is the Pioneer Forest, a large green space where many events and festivals take place (like Oktoberfest, if you’re there during the season).

The Beer Festival in October, the Viennese Dough Festival held during Easter, and the Alpine Chocolate Festival held during the winter holidays are just some of the festivals that await us in this town.

And to end the day with an unforgettable view, you can climb Cerro de la Virgen or Cerro Mirador, which are just a few minutes’ drive from the city center and are totally worth the trip at sunset.

If you have more time and want to visit nearby, visiting the pedestrian village of La Cumbrecita is an excellent option.
