But if there’s one place that makes everyone pull out their cameras, it’s the Alcázar.

With its towers and dark roofs, it looks like an impossible castle… and that very image was one of the inspirations for Disney’s Cinderella Castle.

Then comes Ávila.

The change of scenery is complete.

You go from a fairytale setting to a city encased within a stone fortress.

The moment you step through one of the gates of Kotor’s old town in Montenegro, the feeling is clear: you are traveling back in time.

The narrow cobblestone streets, the natural wear of the buildings, and the lack of a rigid structure all invite one very specific thing: to wander aimlessly. There’s no need to follow an itinerary here. In fact, the best thing to do is simply let yourself be carried away.

Among small squares, local shops, and quiet corners, the atmosphere perfectly blends history with everyday life. It’s not an artificial stage set for tourists, but a place where the city still thrives: laundry hanging out to dry, cats on street corners, and neighbors coming and going from their homes.

One of the key points is the Plaza de Armas, the true heart of the old town. From there, you can walk to the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, one of the city’s most iconic buildings, which is imposing even without going inside.

Furthermore, the old town changes completely depending on the time of day:

The views from the top are spectacular, with the entire bay unfolding before you. However, it’s not a plan for everyone.

The climb has over 1,300 steps, is challenging, and costs approximately €15. Even so, you can enjoy great views along the way without having to reach the top.

Our recommendation is clear:
If you enjoy challenges and panoramic views, it might be worthwhile. But if you prefer a more relaxed trip, it’s not essential to enjoy Kotor.

The cable car: the comfortable alternative with views

For those looking for an easier option, the Kotor cable car is a great alternative.

In just a few minutes you go from sea level to the mountains, with views that gradually open up over the bay. The price is around €20 round trip. Web cable car

At the top, in addition to the views, there are areas to relax and an unexpected activity: an alpine roller coaster. It’s short but fun, and costs around €8 per person.

It’s a different experience that adds a unique touch to the trip.

The Bay of Kotor, Montenegro: what really makes this destination special

Beyond the old town, what defines Kotor is its bay.

Although many compare it to a fjord, it isn’t actually one. However, the combination of high mountains plunging directly into the water creates a unique landscape in Europe.

The best part is that you don’t need elaborate plans to enjoy it. Walking along the water, sitting and observing, or simply strolling along it is enough.

Each moment of the day offers a different perspective:
the calm morning, the afternoon with a warmer light, and a perfect setting for photography.

Just 20 minutes from Kotor, Perast offers a completely different atmosphere.

It’s quieter, with less activity and a much more relaxed pace. Here, the plan is simple: walk, sit by the water, and enjoy.

Opposite Perast lies one of its greatest attractions: the island of Our Lady of the Rocks.

This is an artificial island with a very unique history, built stone by stone over centuries. The visit is brief but very special, offering a different perspective of the bay.

It’s a perfect excursion to spend a few hours on.

Kotor Serpentine: Views with conditions

Another interesting plan is to go up the Kotor Serpentine road for great views.

The scenic road offers spectacular views… but it also has its challenges. It’s narrow, winding, and requires attentive driving.

Furthermore, the weather has a significant impact. On cloudy or rainy days, the experience loses much of its appeal.

If the weather is good, it can be one of the best viewpoints in the area.

Beaches near Kotor: a relaxing plan

Although Kotor in Montenegro is not a beach destination per se, there are nearby options for relaxation.

Dobrota is one of the most accessible, peaceful, and comfortable. Bajova Kula, on the other hand, offers a more natural and less urban environment.

Its most curious feature is that the village is organized in concentric circular streets around the central square.

Built in the 4th century, during Roman times when the city was called Serdica, this small red-brick church preserves medieval frescoes and is a must-visit.

Statue of Sofia

Before crossing toward the archaeological area, you’ll see this large statue inaugurated in 2000, which replaced a former statue of Lenin.

It has become one of the modern symbols of the city.

Church of Sveta Petka

Small, partially sunken below the current street level, and with medieval frescoes inside. Many people walk past without noticing it.

Roman Ruins of Serdica

Here you are literally walking over the ancient Roman city.

You can explore remains of streets, houses, and walls. Access is free and helps you imagine the importance this city had during the imperial era.

Banya Bashi Mosque

Built in the 16th century during the Ottoman period, it is still an active mosque.

Its name refers to the old thermal baths over which it was built.

Sofia Central Mineral Baths

Right across from it are the former thermal baths, now converted into the Sofia History Museum.

Outside, it is still common to see people filling bottles at the mineral water fountains.

Central Market Hall

An early 20th-century building, recently restored.

A good place to take a break, try something local, or simply observe everyday life.

Lions’ Bridge

About 600 meters from the market stands this 19th-century bridge guarded by four lion sculptures.

It is a less touristy area, but interesting for understanding the city’s expansion.

Day 2 in Sofia: icons and monumental buildings

City Garden

The oldest park in the city.

If you visit Sofia in March, you’ll see many people wearing red and white bracelets:

Ivan Vazov National Theatre

The most important theatre in Bulgaria, inaugurated in 1907.

Its neoclassical façade makes it one of the most photogenic buildings in Sofia.

Royal Palace

The former royal residence, now home to the National Art Gallery and the Ethnographic Museum.

Russian Church of St. Nicholas

Small church with golden onion-shaped domes, built for the Russian community at the beginning of the 20th century.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

The great symbol of Sofia.

Built between 1882 and 1912 as a tribute to the Russian soldiers of the Russo-Turkish War, it is one of the largest Orthodox cathedrals in Europe.

Free entry.

In the crypt, you can visit a collection of Orthodox icons (paid entry).

Church of Saint Sofia

A 6th-century temple that gave the city its name.

Simple red-brick architecture.
Entry to the church is free.

The underground archaeological area requires a paid ticket.

National Assembly

Building belonging to the National Assembly, formerly the House of the Communist Party.

Day 3 must-see: Rila Monastery

If you have one more day, don’t hesitate.

Rila Monastery is 115 km from Sofia (about 2 hours by car).

Compared to other European capitals, it is an affordable city. You can eat well without spending too much, and the main attractions are free or low-cost.
