If you have ever thought about travelling to Ronda, I have no doubt that the image that has appeared before your eyes has been that of the Puente Nuevo, connecting the deep canyon, the Tajo de Ronda.

So we crossed Plaza España and headed towards the bridge

It is a bridge that we recommend seeing from all perspectives, since you have views of it from several sides.

Built between 1751 and 1793, it joins the historic and modern areas of the city by crossing the Tajo de Ronda, a gorge carved out by the Guadalevín River.

►A free tour of Ronda can be a very good option to get to know this city.

In addition to getting all the possible views of it, you have the possibility of entering the bridge.

In the upper part, there are the rooms of the bridge that, in other times, were used as a prison, later functioned as an inn and currently, it is an interpretation center of the environment and the history of the city. The entrance fee is €2 and it is a short visit. The construction of the Puente Viejo had the same reasons as those that motivated the last one; that is, to connect the old Islamic medina with the new neighbourhood that emerged after the conquest of the city in the area of the Mercadillo, and which is today known as Barrio de Padre Jesús.

Gate of Philip V

After the collapse of the first new bridge in 1741, the need to improve this entrance to the city was raised due to the large flow of people and goods that were again forced to use it. The old Arab Gate of the bridge was replaced and enlarged by the current one during the reign of the first Bourbon of the Spanish throne, Philip V, in 1742, as stated in the stone inscription located next to the gate.

Arab or Roman Bridge

The Arab Bridge of Ronda or Roman Bridge is located a few meters from the famous Arab Baths that we will visit later. Popularly known as the Roman Bridge, there is nothing that betrays such origin.

House of the Moorish King

Our steps take us to the house of the Moorish King to arrive before it closes and be able to go down to the water mine from the Nasrid era.

The Casa del Rey Moro is a monumental complex, which is made up of three parts: a water mine from the Muslim period, a neo-Mudejar house, and a garden declared of cultural interest. We can visit the garden and the mine.

We took a walk through the garden, the views from it are spectacular, although we had not gone with the idea of seeing the garden, it turned out to be a very nice walk.

In fact, our interest was aroused by the water mine. The water mine is one of the main hydraulic engineering works built in the Nasrid Kingdom during the 14th century. Today, it is the best preserved in Andalusia. It is a work that descends to the bottom of the Tagus where the Guadalevín River runs. It was built taking advantage of a natural vertical crack where a staircase with more than 200 steps develops and descends vertically for about a hundred meters. Inside there are a series of rooms, from cisterns to bedrooms, which were used as a powder magazine and grain storage.

Take your time when you arrive, enjoy the view and the peace that is perceived down there.

All the way down you are thinking about what this will be like on the way up! But it was not that bad.

In any case, keep in mind that there are more than 200 steps, and that as you will see it is a somewhat enclosed place, it may not be to your liking to make this journey. For my part, I tell you that I loved it.

Admission costs €8. ►Website of the House of the Moorish King

When you reach the bottom you will find a small metal platform, from where you have views of the bottom of the pit and that very green water. A very peaceful place, which we enjoyed alone. As I was saying, if you dare to climb the many steps, it is a descent that in my opinion is worth doing. We all have different tastes, I leave my opinion, in this and in all cases, and some images for you to decide.

But hey, the moment of relaxation is over and it’s time to start the climb……

Puerta de Almocabar

We now go to the Almocabar gate, it was built in the thirteenth century and modified in the time of Charles V. In front of the door, we find the Plaza de San Francisco.

We will continue in the old town to walk through its streets and part of the wall.

On our way we will find some churches, in this case, very close to the gate and wall we will see the Church of the Holy Spirit. The Church of the Holy Spirit was built by the Catholic Monarchs on the mosque that was in the Upper Arrabal.

Plaza Duquesa de Parcent

We continue walking through these beautiful and ancient streets, until we reach the Plaza Duquesa de Parcent. In Arab times this square included the most representative buildings of the Madinat: the Great Mosque, the Souk, the Prison and the Alcázar.

Today it is a set of monuments that attract our attention.
