By the way, have you seen our route through the galleries and covered passages of Paris?

As I was saying, today will be a more well-known route, but we will surely discover some different places. Travel companions, welcome to Montmartre!!

Route through Montmartre

-On this route we will do approximately 3 kilometers, counting from the first point to the last.

-The cost will be €1.90 as we will have a metro ticket. Everything will be counted from the first point, you will see how you get to the place.

The previous route, the one of the galleries, ran for the most part in the 9th district ending in the 1st district, today we will go through Montmartre, so we will walk through a part of the 18th district.

Place d’Anvers

Place d’Anvers will be our starting point and from there we will take rue de Steinkerke. We got there by metro as we were not staying nearby.

The walk along the street is already picturesque, because in the distance you can start to see the Sacre Coeur. Surrounded by shops we continue the walk.

If you don’t have one, take advantage of buying a bottle of water at a mini market, since if it’s hot you’ll need it for the hike, as there will be many climbs.

We chose to do this tour early in the morning, but it can also be a good option in the afternoon to see the sunset from the foot of the Sacre Coeur.

At the end of this street we come to the Saint Pierre carousel. Those who have seen the film Amélie will remember it from some scenes.

The beautiful carrousel of Montmartre dates back to the eighteenth century and is Venetian in style.

From there we are only a few steps from the funicular that will take us up to the Sacre Coeur, or you also have the option of taking the stairs, but I preferred to save my energy for later.

You can also take bus 40 if you don’t want to walk, but… I think it’s worth the walk. ►Line 40 stops

Funicular de Montmartre

The price of the ride is the same as a metro ticket €1.90. If you have not purchased one of the transport passes (such as Paris Visit or Navigo) you have an option to save on tickets, which is to buy a pack of 10 tickets. Did you see our post with the tourist passes in Paris?

Once you’re at a ticket machine at any metro station, you punch in a single ticket, and there you’ll be presented with the option to buy tickets individually for €1.90 or in packs of ten for €16.9. It’s a small saving, but a saving nonetheless. Here at the funicular you have a ticket office.

The Montmartre funicular has been in operation since 1900, having been remodeled several times since its opening. The journey takes just over a minute and carries millions of passengers a year. Hours are from 6 a.m. to 12:45 a.m.

Basilica of Sacre Coeur

As soon as we arrive, we are greeted by the views of the city and the beautiful Basilica of the Sacred Heart.

Admission to the basilica is free, and its interior is really worth it. The tail is long but usually moves quickly.

If you would like to go up to the dome if it has a cost and it is € 7, we suppose that the views from there must be very good, but as we have not yet done it is not something we can recommend.

Sacré Coeur

The basilica began to be built in 1875 but was not consecrated until the end of the First World War. It is one of the most iconic places in Montmartre and one of the main tourist attractions in Paris. It is a reminder of the Parisian bohemia of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a time when several poor painters lived nearby, who later became known worldwide.

The tour of this neighborhood is literally a labyrinth of charming streets, take a detour in every corner you find. You won’t regret it.

Montmartre was originally a village with vineyards and wheat plantations until it was incorporated into the municipality of Paris in 1860, since then, its territory constitutes essentially the 18th arrondissement of Paris. In the mid-19th century it acquired a bad reputation due to the cabarets installed in the area, but also several artists began to live in Montmartre, attracted here by the cheaper cost of living, making it one of the main artistic centres of Paris.

Le Consulat

We leave the Place du tertre for a moment and then return and follow our steps to Le Consulat.

This short journey of only about 100 metres will pass slowly as we will stop countless times to admire the old buildings of Montmartre.

Beyond the fact that Le Consulat is a restaurant where we can go for French cuisine, its facade is famous on the networks, almost always named among the 10 Instagram spots in Paris. Who hasn’t seen it in photos, right?

We see a lot of restaurants as we walk, we haven’t eaten in any so I can’t recommend which one to eat in, but I can tell you that during this trip we found The Fork app very convenient, you look for restaurants near your location and it will give you the average prices of each one, the rating given by other users as well as the menu. It can be useful when you are unsure about the prices and quality of the place.

The characteristic of this square, as we said, is the painters and portraitists that we find in it. The influx of artists meant that the occupation of the small space of the square was regulated, granting a limited number of licenses.

We find here engravings, oil paintings, pencil portraits, color portraits, in short, everything.

You can if you want to let yourself have your portrait drawn, the cost will be between €30 and €50.

We continue our journey, a few steps distance us from three more points to visit, we do about 200 meters and we will see…..

La Maison Rose

We thus arrive at a very photographed place, the Maison Rose.

Catalan painter Ramon Pichot and his wife transformed this house, which was their studio, into a restaurant “La Maison Rose” and it was frequented at the time by residents of the Bateau Lavoir and their artist friends such as Dali and Picasso.

We have also seen the façade in thousands of photos, as well as in series and films, such as Emily in Paris.

Although we will return to this corner to visit another very photographed site, we continue a few more steps, about 100 meters, as you can see all this last one is very, very close to one point of another.

Our steps will take us to a vineyard and a cabaret.

Clos Montmartre

Remember that I told you that the hill was a village with vineyards and wheat, this vineyard that is in Montmartre is the oldest vineyard in the capital.

Au Lapin Agile

Just across the street we find the oldest cabaret in Paris, Au Lapin Agile.

Rue de l’Abrevoir

We retrace our steps to the Maison Rose and go down the Rue de l’Abreuvoir to the Place Dalida.

We will be here on one of the most beautiful streets in Paris and perhaps the most photographed in Montmartre. As we said, at one end is the Maison Rose and at the other the bust of Dalida, the singer-songwriter whose remains rest in the Montmartre cemetery.

Here there is also a scene in Emily in Paris that portrays her.

Moulin de la Galette

If you continue along this street you will end up in the Rue Lepic, being able in a few meters more the Mill of the galette that worked as a mill in the time of wheat plantations and that over the years became a dance hall, today we can pass by there to portray it from the rue Lepic.

I Love You Wall

Time passes quickly as we retrace our steps down the hill towards rue Gabrielle, where we continue down to reach the Wall of Love. We now walk for about 500 metres.

The style of the area has changed a little but that does not mean that it is less charming, every corner we pass through has a very special magic.

We arrive at the Abbesses square and therefore also at the wall of the I love you.

The Place des Abesses is very picturesque because of the movement that we find in it, it has the deepest metro station in Paris and the decoration inside is very particular.

Mur des Je t’aime or the Wall of I Love You, is a 40 m² mural, which reproduces 311 “I love you”s in 250 languages, and which has become a very visited attraction by tourists as you can see in the images.

Saint Jean de Montmartre Church

In front we can see the Church Saint Jeane de Montmartre, in the Art Nuveau style, built between 1894 and 1904. It is classified as a historical monument of France.

Café des Deux Molins

Continue along Rue de Abesses to Rue Lepic. It will take us 500 meters to the Café des Deux Molins. On the way we see in the distance the already named Moulin de la Galette.

We arrive at one of Amelie’s locations

The Café des Dos Molinos is a café-brasserie in Paris. He became famous in 2001 in the film Amélie Because it was the stage in which the protagonist worked as a waitress.
