Colmar is located in the area of \u200b\u200bAlsace, France, very close to the border with Germany, in about 20 to 25 kilometers you will be crossing into the neighboring country if you want to do so. Many call it the most beautiful city in the world to spend Christmas and it is the wine capital of Alsace.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether you choose it at Christmas or at another time of year, we will see what to see in Colmar, a dreamlike city that seems straight out of a fairy tale.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At <strong>Christmas<\/strong> you have <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.civitatis.com\/es\/colmar\/tour-navidad-alsacia\/?aid=10563&amp;cmp=postcolmar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tours of the Christmas markets in the As we saw in the post about <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/en\/the-most-beautiful-villages-in-alsace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the most beautiful villages in Alsace<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, here we also find countless half-timbered houses in magical colors. From this small bridge on Rue des \u00c9coles we see these picturesque colorful houses that belonged to Colmar&#8217;s old fishermen. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Colmar_Covered_Market\"><\/span>Colmar Covered Market<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Colmar everything is very well signposted, so it is very easy to find your way around.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leaving the fishmongers&#8217; quay, we will enter this market building dating from 1865<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A stroll through the market is worth it. You will find fruit, vegetables and caf\u00e9s, and you can take the opportunity to grab a bite to eat. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many typical dishes to try in Alsace. I recommend tarte flamb\u00e9e and baeckeoffe, along with a good Alsatian wine; my favorite is the Riesling variety. Rue des Tanneurs is the area where the tanners used to live. Most of the buildings are tanners&#8217; houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. They are narrow, deep and tall, and the roofs have many openings where they dried the hides they prepared in the nearby stream.   <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Old_Customs_House_Square\"><\/span>Old Customs House Square<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/colmar-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9996\" srcset=\"https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/colmar-4.jpg 800w, https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/colmar-4-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a short walk we reach Place de l&#8217;Ancienne Douane. This square with its fountain stands opposite the Old Customs House, also known as the Ko\u00effhus, a Gothic and Renaissance building in Colmar. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1930.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Construction of this Gothic building began in 1480, and it became the political and economic center of the city.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We continue our walk through this fairy-tale city.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Very close by we find a curiosity: Colmar&#8217;s Manneken Pis, a replica of the famous statue located near the Grand Place in Brussels.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The city of Brussels gave it to Colmar to celebrate the anniversary of the Liberation of Colmar. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><iframe class=\"civitatis-iframe\" src=\"https:\/\/www.civitatis.com\/widget-activities\/?affiliated=10563&#038;display=cosy&#038;cant=3&#038;lang=es&#038;currency=EUR&#038;destination=901&#038;transfer=0&#038;cmp=Widget_ESpostcolmar&#038;width=100%&#038;hideButton=0&#038;centerContent=1&#038;typeSelection=all&#038;color=5f9ea0&#038;typography=Montserrat&#038;removeBackground=1&#038;showShadow=1&#038;roundedButtons=1\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" data-maxwidth=\"100%\" style=\"max-width: 100%\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Rue_des_Marchands\"><\/span>Rue des Marchands<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We set off along Rue des Marchands, a very lively street full of shops and charming houses. The Christmas shops are open all year round, so, strange as it may seem, you can buy ornaments for your Christmas tree whatever the date. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pfister_House\"><\/span>Pfister House<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Built in 1537, the Pfister House is the first example of Renaissance architecture in Colmar. You will spot it right away because tourists surround it taking photographs. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bartholdi_Museum\"><\/span>Bartholdi Museum<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the walk you will notice that the route is marked on the cobblestones with triangles as route markers, featuring the Statue of Liberty and the word Colmar.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is because Auguste Bartholdi, the sculptor of the Statue of Liberty that France gave to the United States, was born here in Colmar.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And so we come to the Bartholdi Museum. Housed in the sculptor&#8217;s birthplace, it holds numerous sculptures. Admission is \u20ac5. Another museum you can add in Colmar is the Unterlinden Museum, with collections of sculptures and paintings. The tourist office will tell you where it stops.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u25ba<strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Bus-gratuito-Colmar.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Map of the free bus route<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"St_Martins_Collegiate_Church_and_Cathedral_Square\"><\/span>St. Martin&#8217;s Collegiate Church and Cathedral Square<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/colmar-5.jpg\" alt=\"what to see in Colmar\" class=\"wp-image-9998\" srcset=\"https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/colmar-5.jpg 800w, https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/colmar-5-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We arrive at Cathedral Square and St. Martin&#8217;s Collegiate Church, whose construction began in 1235.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dominican_Convent\"><\/span>Dominican Convent<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our route takes us past the Dominican Convent, a former convent built in the 13th century that now houses the Unterlinden Museum.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Maison_des_Tetes\"><\/span>Maison des T\u00eates<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another stop on this route is the Maison des T\u00eates. The House of Heads owes its name to the decoration on its facade, which features 105 masks.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_did_we_stay_in_Colmar\"><\/span>Where did we stay in Colmar?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hotel we chose for the two days we spent in Colmar was the <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/fr\/turenne-colmar.es.html?aid=2008743&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hotel Turenne<\/a><\/em><\/strong>. Located just a few steps from the start of Colmar&#8217;s old town, it was a good choice for our taste. They are wonderful, just like something out of a fairy tale.
