The sparkling route located in the northeast of France, less than 150 kilometres from Paris, awaits us with its landscapes of vineyards, the exceptional cellars where the champagne is stored, and that welcomed us with the Notre Dame cathedral, the place where many of the kings of France were crowned. And where, honoring the name of this route, we visited the Vranken Pommery winery.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All this is in our previous post \u25ba <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/en\/reims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">REIMS <\/a><\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We woke up in Reims and were ready to take a leisurely stroll along this route. The &#8220;Champagne Route in France&#8221; is always marked with a characteristic sign that accompanies you along the section you take.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winalist.es\/regions\/champagne%20?utm_source=europaacompanada&amp;utm_medium=affiliate&amp;utm_campaign=europaacompanada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Find wine experiences and winery views in the Champagne area  <\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shortly after leaving the city we find the Fort de la Pompelle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a World War I memorial site converted into a museum recalling the fighting in Reims and Champagne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We only made the stop but we did not enter it. The ticket price is \u20ac5.50, also included in the <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.es\/reims-l365\/reims-pase-de-la-ciudad-de-24-horas-t416881\/?partner_id=JBOGQWX&amp;utm_medium=online_publisher&amp;placement=content-middle&amp;cmp=postreims\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reims tourist pass<\/a><\/em><\/strong>. Free admission from January to March 31, 2023. The schedule is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u25baFind more information on their <a href=\"https:\/\/musees-reims.fr\/fr\/musees\/musee-du-fort-de-la-pompelle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">official website<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We continue our journey on this champagne route in France and go to Verzenay, only 17 kilometers separate us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Verzenay\"><\/span>Verzenay<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/champana-15.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/champana-15.jpg 800w, https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/champana-15-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The route as we approach Verzenay begins to reveal its charm. The hills of vineyards appear painted and in the distance we can see a mill and a lighthouse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This charming town full of history, which was partly destroyed during the First World War due to its proximity to the front line, boasts a perfectly preserved mill and a lighthouse which now houses the Museum of the Vineyard. Its recently renovated 18th-century church is at the heart of the village. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div data-gyg-href=\"https:\/\/widget.getyourguide.com\/default\/activities.frame\" data-gyg-locale-code=\"es-ES\" data-gyg-widget=\"activities\" data-gyg-number-of-items=\"3\" data-gyg-partner-id=\"JBOGQWX\" data-gyg-q=\"champagne%20france\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This Verzenay windmill is a historic monument, it has served various purposes over the centuries, including hosting visits from many heads of state, for the last fifty years the windmill has been part of the Maison Mumm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/champana-13.jpg\" alt=\"Champagne Route France\" class=\"wp-image-10467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/champana-13.jpg 800w, https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/champana-13-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hills, houses and cellars of Champagne are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, in the category &#8220;cultural landscapes&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vineyards of the Montagne de Reims area extend between the forest massif of the Montagne de Reims Regional Natural Park and the agricultural plain. This region has microclimates that allow the cultivation of the three grape varieties authorised for champagne. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mill, although very attractive, does not seem strange to us to find it, but&#8230; a lighthouse in the middle of the Verzenay vineyards? Well, the reason is that this is where the&nbsp;Maison&nbsp;de Champagne J. Goulet is located, which in 1909 had this lighthouse built for advertising. The lighthouse cast its light over the area.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/champana-18.jpg\" alt=\"Champagne Route France\" class=\"wp-image-10468\" srcset=\"https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/champana-18.jpg 800w, https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/champana-18-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, transformed into a vineyard museum, from its garden or by climbing the 25 metres of the building, you can enjoy an exceptional panoramic view of the slopes of the Montagne de Reims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cost of a visit to the museum with the climb is \u20ac9, and the climb alone is \u20ac3. Opening hours are from 10 am to 6 pm, and it is closed during the month of January. As I always say, it is generally cheaper to pick up and return it in the same place. This type of tours have a very particular charm, and as I always tell you, visiting a country is not only about getting to know its capital and big cities, going inside is very interesting, at least for me.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We now go to perhaps the most touristy and charming village in the area, Hautvillers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are only 27 km away from Hautvillers  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hautvillers\"><\/span>Hautvillers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/champana-3.jpg\" alt=\"Champagne Route France\" class=\"wp-image-10472\" srcset=\"https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/champana-3.jpg 800w, https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/champana-3-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As soon as we arrived we began to realize that we did indeed find tourists here, there were quite a few parked cars as well as the general movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the middle of these vineyards lies the&nbsp; village of Hautvillers, the birthplace of champagne. It was here, in the former Benedictine abbey of Hautvillers, that the monk-winemaker Dom P\u00e9rignon discovered the champagne method in the 18th century.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dom P\u00e9rignon lies today in the heart of the village abbey.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> A tour of Hautvillers is charming, a wine-growing village where 140 wrought iron badges relating to the Champagne trade accompany the tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At every turn of our gaze we find photos that look like a postcard. If you are going to visit Hautvillers, although it is small, take time to enjoy it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/champana-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/champana-11.jpg 800w, https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/champana-11-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We continue our journey towards Cumi\u00e9res, only 3 kilometers separate us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The slow walk through Hautvillers takes us to the abbey where Dom Perignon discovered the champagne method, and also to the recently unveiled statue of Dom Perigon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cumieres\"><\/span>Cumi\u00e8res<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/champana-6.jpg\" alt=\"Champagne Route France\" class=\"wp-image-10474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/champana-6.jpg 800w, https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/champana-6-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the banks of the Marne we find Cumi\u00e8res, with a particular charm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the same characteristics as the previous one in terms of charm and tranquility, on the river bank we find these iron sculptures on wine-making activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Small and with few people on its streets, it is a stop on our way to Epernay, the city where we will stay and visit a champagne production winery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We will do only 4 kilometers more to Damery<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Damery\"><\/span>Damery<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/champana-7.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10475\" srcset=\"https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/champana-7.jpg 800w, https:\/\/europaacompanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/champana-7-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Damery is very charming, and although it was just a stop on our Champagne route through France, we were able to enjoy it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We continued our route towards Epernay, 8 kilometres away. A visit to a winery and our accommodation awaited us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-pale-ocean-gradient-background has-background wp-block-paragraph\">Having internet is always important. The visit begins in the welcome room, where the signs and the audio guide prepare you for what you will see. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this case, the audio-guided tour is in Spanish, the descent is by elevator and then a train takes you through the entire route of the underground cellars. At the end of the tour you have a tasting of two glasses of champagne, you can choose between white or ros\u00e9, we opted for one of each. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1871, Eug\u00e8ne Mercier began a project to dig his champagne cellars. The place was charming and the crepes were magnificent. As I said at the beginning, there is more to see.
