Visiting Dijon in the Burgundy region of France makes us think about what to see in the city of mustard. Perhaps you have heard of it for its high quality wines, or perhaps for its mustard. Dijon is the capital of the Burgundy region in eastern France, one of the main wine-growing areas in the country.
Two things to highlight in this city and in this area, the first, its historic center, which we will be talking about in the following lines, and the second, the route along the route of the vineyards, the Des Grands Crus route, a route that we have told and passed tips to do it, in the previous post.
But today we will dedicate ourselves purely and exclusively to talking about this charming city: Dijon.
Let’s go point by point, we’ll see where to stay in the city and also what to see and do there, so that your trip is a wonderful experience, as ours has been. Visit Dijon, what to see in the city of mustard.
During the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries Dijon was the capital of the Duchy of Burgundy, and so we find a very elegant old town.
As you can imagine, the city has a lot to offer. It does not have mass tourism, so it is doubly recommended, shall we start?
Liberation Square
We begin our tour in this beautiful French square, the heart of Dijon’s historic centre. If there is one thing to visit in Dijon, this beautiful city, it is the Place de la Liberation. It was hot even though it was only May, and the children were getting wet in the water jets in the square. Scenes straight out of a movie, which one imagines while enjoying the walk…
From the same square we continue to see what to visit in Dijon, and we see that it should not only be known for its mustard.
Royal Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy
This is a remarkable building located on Place de la Liberation. Built in 1364, it has undergone several renovations and extensions. The complex now houses Dijon’s Town Hall and the Museum of Fine Arts.
Courthouse
The Palais de Justice, the former parliament of Dijon, was built in the 16th century in the Renaissance style.
Torre Philippe Le Bon
If you want a panoramic view of Dijon, you will get it from the Phileppe Le Bon Tower, 46 metres high.
The climb is with a guide, at fixed times, you can make a reservation at the tourist office, it costs €5.

Notre Dame Church
It is a beautiful building, with a very particular façade, and was built in the 13th century. Don’t miss a visit to the interior, entrance is free.
St. Michael’s Church
The San Miguel church dates back to the 16th century and has a Renaissance façade but with a mixture of architectural styles, as its construction was between the transition between Gothic and Renaissance.
Place Francois Rude and Rue des Forges
The Francois Rude square is small but very attractive. As you walk around, you’ll see a mixture of old buildings and modern shops. Rue des Forges and the streets leading off it have a very special charm. In many shops you’ll find traditional Dijon mustard, which you can bring back as a souvenir.
The walk through the city is the most recommended, you will find wonderful corners. Although it doesn’t have mass tourism, you have several different activities to do in Dijon.
Square of the Dukes of Burgundy
A corner that I loved. A small square, surrounded by beautiful buildings, but above all surrounded by tranquility.
Dijon Cathedral
Finally, we leave the visit to its cathedral. The Dijon Cathedral was finished in the 15th century. In this case, the walk will be a little longer from the center. But at the end of the post we leave you a map with all the locations, including those of the hotel and the restaurant that we will detail, and you will see that everything is very, very close, so you can do it on foot.
Where do we stay to visit Dijon?
There are several centrally located accommodations at a good price where you can stay, but I’m going to tell you where we stayed, because I think it’s worth taking a look.
The chosen accommodation is an old monastery recently renovated and converted into a hotel/apart hotel, and just a few steps from everything you have to visit and see in Dijon.
Odalys City Dijon Les Cordeliers, It was the accommodation chosen, the service was good, the breakfast too, but what stands out the most is the charm of the place and the comfort of the rooms. I leave you some photos to give you an idea,
Where did we eat in Dijon’s old town?
There are many places to eat or dine in Dijon. Small, charming places with the characteristic good French cuisine. We chose a small place on Rue Almiran Roussin, a very central place, with a good atmosphere, friendliness and good food.
