A walk through the history of Sibiu
Founded in the 12th century by German Saxon settlers, Sibiu was a fortified city and one of the most important trading centers in the region. Its famous “Eyes of Sibiu,” the ventilation openings in the roofs, became a unique architectural symbol: they seem to watch passersby as they stroll along its cobbled streets.
Main Square (Piața Mare)
The Grand Square is the historic heart of Sibiu and one of the most impressive spaces in all of Transylvania. Its Baroque and Renaissance buildings reflect the prosperity of the ancient Saxon city.
Among the places you can’t miss are:
- Brukenthal Palace, home of the Brukenthal National Museum, one of the oldest in Central Europe.
- The Jesuit Church, from the 18th century, with an elegant white and gold baroque facade.
- The curious iron structure known as “the cage”, under which the old medieval water well was located.

Strada Nicolae Bălcescu, the pedestrian promenade

Habermann Markt and the medieval walls
A short walk from the historic center is the Habermann Markt, a modern square surrounded by cafes and terraces. To get there, you’ll cross part of Sibiu’s old city wall, whose well-preserved remains are a reminder of the city’s fortified past.
Little Square and the Bridge of Lies
The Little Square (Piața Mică) retains the most authentic charm of Sibiu’s medieval old town. Among its most notable buildings are the Luxemburg House, the Artelor House, and the Hermes House, home to the Emil Sigerus Saxon Museum of Ethnography.
At one end stands the Bridge of Lies, Romania’s first cast-iron bridge (1859). Legend has it that it creaks when someone lies while crossing it. It’s one of the city’s most photographed spots and a symbol of the Old Town.
Evangelical Cathedral of Saint Mary
The Evangelical Cathedral of St. Mary is one of the must-see monuments in Sibiu and a prime example of Transylvanian Gothic architecture. Its 73-meter tower dominates the city skyline. Inside, a monumental Baroque organ and numerous carved tombstones of Saxon nobles are particularly noteworthy.
Entry costs around 15 lei (about 3 euros). Climbing the tower offers one of the best panoramic views of Sibiu.

During our stay, we stayed at the Hotel Marabella, an excellent choice due to its location just steps from the historic center and main attractions. The hotel is very well maintained, offers outstanding service, and has on-site parking, which is very convenient if you’re traveling by car. The rooms are small but comfortable, and the value for money is excellent.
Undoubtedly, a good choice for those looking for proximity to explore the city on foot.
What to see in Sibiu at night
As night falls, Sibiu transforms. The lights enhance the colors of its facades, and the squares take on a magical atmosphere. Dining at one of the restaurants in Little Square or along the pedestrian walkway is an excellent way to end the day. Romanian cuisine is surprisingly high-quality, and the people are incredibly warm.

- How to get there: It is located about 275 km from Bucharest, approximately 4 hours by car.
- Where to stay: the historic center is a good option for exploring
- Recommended time: one or two days are enough to see the main attractions.
