Drive along the Amalfi Coast to Positano by car:
Reaching Positano along the Amalfi Coast, one of the most beautiful places in the world, and doing it by road, is something truly spectacular.
You can have many final destinations in it, ours: Positano, but it could have been Sorrento, Amalfi or so many others.
But let’s take some things into account when planning the trip. Shall we start?
What to see on a route along the Amalfi Road?
We are going to mark a route for you, although you can plan other options, and surely all of them will be very attractive, because the Amalfi Coast is ….. simply dazzling.
In our case the journey started in Naples. If there is a typical city when you think of Italy, that is Naples. With its houses with clothes hanging on their balconies, its somewhat disorderly traffic, and Vesuvius at its feet, it has a very special charm. This is our starting point with destination: Positano, and from there to make “base” to visit other places like Sorrento, Amalfi, Capri or Ravello.

If you plan to visit Naples don’t miss our last visit
From Naples to get to Positano along the Amalfi road you have about 80 kilometers, passing through Sorrento, this is a good stop, or perhaps a good destination to stay, as accommodation is generally cheaper than in Positano.
SEARCH FOR ACCOMMODATION IN SORRENTO

From Positano, along the Amalfi road towards Salerno (about 60 km more), you have beautiful places to stay such as Amalfi, Ravello or Vietri Sul Mare.
Embark and go visit Capri is something you can’t miss, you have departures from Naples, Sorrento, Amalfi or Positano, obviously we did it from the latter, and despite the large number of people we found on the island, it was a very good option.

Driving precautions on the Amalfi road.
Drive along the strada statale ss163 (Amalfi Coast road).
Just as we said that it is of unparalleled beauty, we also have to take into account that it is a dangerous road.
Declared a World Heritage Site in 1997, the ss163 (Amalfi Coast road) is a drive you will never forget, but when thinking of doing this scenic drive along the sea and between villages hanging from the hillsides, first of all let’s take some time to decide if we are able to drive with caution on it, if you do not have vertigo, fear of heights or fear of driving on narrow roads. Then….enjoy!!!
The route is about 70 kilometers long, with traffic in both directions, winding, with quite narrow passages and also very busy.
Our tour was in spring, so you can imagine that in summer it must be more congested.
If, after all this, you are still determined, we will go ahead!

Where to park the car ?
If you have decided, as we did, to spend a couple of nights in Positano, you will feel when you arrive that you have something to spare……the car.
Now, what do I do with it? Although it seems impossible to find a parking lot among these slopes, the truth is that there are some, ask your accommodation to recommend the nearest one so you don’t have to walk too far to it (although in a short time, going up and down slopes in this beautiful city, will become something very normal).

Where to sleep ?
Places like Sorrento, Amalfi or Positano are good options when choosing a place to use as a “base” for touring the area. In our case we chose Positano, although the prices of accommodations are somewhat higher.
But in truth the place is paradisiacal, and if you search patiently you will find some affordable B&B. We stayed at Villa Palumbo and it was a great choice. Simple, but with a balcony for breakfast in the room, and attended by its owners. Perhaps not so central, but walking around Positano is a delight, and there is a bus that makes a round trip around the city, so we took it in front and we arrived at the center right away. Point and aside: I recommend taking it and going all the way around, it’s a beautiful tour.

SEARCH FOR ACCOMMODATION ON THE AMALFI COAST
A good tip to look for accommodation and have real photos of the guests, as well as reviews, which come in handy when choosing, is to do it on Tripadvisor. The idea is to save money when choosing accommodation, but not to stay in a place that then takes away the charm of the area by having a bad time, so doing a last search by looking at photos and reading reviews of the site never hurts.
Where to eat?
There are many places along the coast to sit and eat with an incredible view. We chose in Positano the “Ristorante Il Capitano” of the Hotel MontemareThe terrace overlooking the sea, and a very good service to enjoy exquisite dinners. We had a great time, and it is a place we highly recommend.
