1- Haarlem
Located just 30 kilometres from Amsterdam, this city is a magnificent place to visit and get lost in its streets. It is a very picturesque medieval city and is often called “Amsterdam in miniature” due to its size. A city, not a town, close to Amsterdam, very close, worth a visit.
The Grote Markt is the city’s main square and its focal point, along with St. Bavo’s Church and the Town Hall. A tour of its canals is also a must.
We also highlight the visit to the Jopen brewery, which is located in what was once a church. The hamburgers were delicious and the beer was very good too, apart from the atmosphere.

2- Volendam
Volendam is a small port city with a population of about 22,000.
It is a very touristy town, visiting its town and its streets is very charming, you will find some of its inhabitants in traditional costumes, apart from many bars and shops where you will surely find some souvenirs to take home.

3- Edam
Perhaps we already associate it with cheese when we hear it. Belonging to the commune of Edam-Volendam, this small town of 7,000 inhabitants will captivate us with its beauty and Edam cheese.

4- Marken
The place was once an island, but was connected to the mainland by a permanent dike. Since the Middle Ages, Marken has lost about a third of its total area. On the eastern part of the island, underwater, there are still remains of a medieval cloister that was washed away by the waves.
Straight out of a storybook, right? That’s what all the cities and towns we’ve visited in the Netherlands are like.
The houses in Marken are built on artificial terracotta slabs, which were largely erected in the 15th century. This type of construction allowed the inhabitants to be protected from the frequent floods.

5- Zaanse Schans
Welcome to the town of windmills.
Visiting Zaanse Schans is like going back in time and imagining what life was like in Holland in the 17th and 18th centuries. In this region you will see typical houses, windmills, a tin factory and a dairy farm and cheese factory with artisanal products, all in such a way as to give you a complete idea of what life was like at that time.
More than 600 windmills were built in the area around the Zaanse Schans during the 17th century. This made it the first industrial region. The windmills were used to grind spices and produce paint, wooden boards, dyes and oils. Many windmills are still standing and can be visited. 6- Monnickendam
The truth is that we discovered this town, very close to Marken, by chance. As I was saying, we had rented a car, and while we were on our own, trying to get to another place, we found this small and charming town.
Although it is now a small fishing village, it was an important port in earlier centuries. It received city rights in 1355 and was badly damaged during the fires of 1500 and 1513.
A walk through its streets makes you feel surrounded by locals, without tourists, and you see the life they lead in these small towns.
As you can see, there are several cities and towns near Amsterdam that we can visit. They are very pleasant tours to do, and they are really worth it.
