Cabo de Gata in Almería was a place I had heard a lot about, and I really wanted to visit it. The coast of Almería was promising and although it was not yet summer but the beginning of autumn, the idea was still tempting. With the good weather that this area enjoys, it was a fact that we would take a dip, although the idea was to do this route to get to know the coast and enjoy its landscapes.
We rented a car from Discovercars; they usually have good deals.
We had spent the night in Mojácar, one of the most beautiful towns in Spain, and we were about to make the road to the city of Almeria.

Our tour would start in Mojácar, with a stop in Carboneras, Playa de los Muertos, Mesa Roldán, Agua Amarga, Playa de Monsul, and the Cabo de Gata Lighthouse.

Macenas Castle
As soon as we left and began to roll along the beaches of Mojácar, after a few kilometres we found a place to stop, the Macenas Tower or Castle on Macenas beach.
This building caught our attention. It dates back to the second half of the 18th century and was intended to defend the coast. Later, it was occupied by the Spanish Civil Guard.
We continued on our way to Carboneras, the views you get are impressive, and on one of those curves we came across a viewpoint, a new stop: Mirador de la Granatilla.
Granatilla viewpoint and the beginning of the Cabo de Gata natural park
This impressive viewpoint is located at the northern beginning of the Cabo de Gata Nijar Natural Park, coinciding with the municipal boundary of Mojácar and Carboneras.
Pay attention when you arrive at the viewpoint because it is an essential stop. As we didn’t know, we missed it and had to turn back. I wouldn’t have missed it for anything.
We continued on our way, this route to Carboneras is of impressive beauty, the aridity of the terrain, the curves in the road and the views of the coast make it an unbeatable walk.
We arrive at Carboneras. This fishing village, converted into a tourist destination, located on the shores of the Mediterranean on this coast of Almería, appears before our eyes at the end of these curves of the road. We imagine that in summer it must be full of tourists, but at the time of year when we visited it, it was peaceful.

Our stop would not be in the city but we would go to see one of the most famous beaches, Playa de los Muertos, and then go up to Mesa Roldán and find one of the Game of Thrones sets.
When you get to the turnoff to Playa de los Muertos or Mesa Roldán you will find a parking lot to leave your car. This is paid for during the summer but not when we went. There you will find a tourist information center, one of those that are always appreciated! There they explained to us how to walk to the Playa de los Muertos viewpoint, or also how to go down to the beach itself. In our case we opted to only go to the viewpoint, the walk is short, not tiring and the views are magnificent. It is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Spain.
You never cease to be amazed to see these places where nature has been preserved in this way, a marvel. This beach lacks services such as toilets, waste bins, cafeteria-bar, due to its protection by the Cabo de Gata natural park, thus preserving all its scenic value.
Returning to the tourist information point we found out about visiting Mesa Roldán, the path starts from there, although it is not in perfect condition it is still passable.
Mesa Roldán and Game of Thrones
Mesa Roldán is a volcanic plateau with a limestone ridge. It is an ideal viewing point and we can find the lighthouse built in 1863 and the watchtower, which as we see it today dates back to 1766 but its origins are much more remote; there is evidence that it already existed in 1497.
This Torre de Mesa Roldán was one of the settings, as well as others in this province of Almeria, of Game of Thrones.
In Game of Thrones we can see this tower in the sixth season in the Battle of Meereen, when Daenerys, along with Tyrion, Grey Worm and Missandei meet with the masters of Yunkai, Volantis and Qaggaz, to offer them to surrender and cease their intentions to attack the city.
Bitter Water
We continue our journey, leaving Game of Thrones behind, and we find a beautiful town of white houses and nestled between settlers, we arrive at Agua Amarga belonging to the municipality of Nijar.
A more crowded beach was what we found, and here we took advantage of it for a while to take a break on the way.
But it was time to continue our journey, so we hit the road again, which would take us to a viewpoint: Mirador de la Amatista.
Amethyst Viewpoint
We found another tourist information point here, which we also took advantage of, because we needed some information to continue the route.
Located between Rodalquilar and Isleta del Moro we find this viewpoint that allows us to appreciate the natural beauty of the area. It is a stop that we recommend to make, the views are really impressive.
Mónsul Beach and Genoveses Beach
Although we felt like staying, we returned to the route, now heading to San José to access Mónsul beach from there.
We took advantage of this visit in October with very few people, an experience that, from what we were told, does not happen in the summer as it is very visited.
It is only 4 kilometres from the town of San José. The car park is a little far away, but it is very easy to access.
This emblematic beach has also been used as a film set, such as for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, but it has not been the only one.
By the same path you take with the car you also access the Playa de los Genoveses, the natural environment is wonderful.
Cabo de Gata Lighthouse
Now if the destination would be the Cabo de Gata Lighthouse.
Kilometers of beach unfold before our eyes, with the view of a lighthouse that we want to reach.
All these stops we made are just some of the countless wonderful points that you find in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park
And from here the view of the reefs of the Mermaids, a must on this tour without a doubt.
Our tour would take us to the city of Almeria where we would stay for three days to continue touring this province that we already had in love, but we will follow that in the next post.
