Shall we take a tour of some of the many film locations in Almería?

As I think we have already detailed well what to see in Almeria capital, Mojácar and a road trip through Cabo de Gata, we are going to add film sites to your stay in Almeria.

We move to the first film location in Almería, we go to what was the setting for the film Exodus and which was later used for Game of Thrones.

El Chorrillo, Pechina

Located on the slopes of the Sierra de Alhamilla we find the El Chorrilo area in Pechina, and in it the sets, it is about 15 kilometers from Almería Capital, and you can find them marked on Google maps.

Here, Exodus Gods and Kings in 2014 and scenes from Game of Thrones from the sixth season were filmed.

As we said we are in Pechina, here is what was an outdoor recording set built for the film Exodus by Ridley Scott and that Game of Thrones, with some modifications, used it in the sixth season for the scenes of the city Vaes Dothrak.

In both cases, it has not been the only location used in Almería. In the case of Game of Thrones, we have already seen some others in other videos, and in Exodus we will see some more later.

Access is not complicated and walking through these abandoned buildings has something magical about it. If you have a car and are spending a few days in Almería, this can be a good option for a visit.

Nearby is another set that was used to shoot episodes of season 3 of the American thriller series Penny Dreadfull.

Rodalquilar

The Denver plant, Rodalquilar’s gold mine, has also been filmed in and around it.

These abandoned mines with added scenery were used for filming Warriors of the Sun in 1986 and The Wells Mystery in 2003. If we continued to explore these mines we would find scenes from Duck, Damn, from 1971, Curro Giménez, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade filmed in a mining tunnel, A Reason to Live and a Reason to Die in 1972, and also scenes from the previously mentioned Exodus. But the place is quite abandoned and up to this point we are the only ones who dare to go there.

Cortijo del Fraile

Speaking of abandoned places we arrive at the next location in Almeria, we arrive at the Cortijo del Fraile.

A sign on arrival shows us all the films filmed here, as well as some series such as Paco’s Men.

To get to the Cortijo del Fraile we will go to Los Albaricoques and from there we will see that a dirt road is signposted to the farmhouse.

In Nijar, very close to Rodalquilar and Los Albaricoques, we find the Cortijo del Fraile.

In its vicinity took place in 1928 the event known as “Crime of Nijar”, which inspired the drama in verse by Federico García Lorca Bodas de Sangre.

It was built by the Dominican Friars of Almería in the 18th century, hence its name. It was known as the “cortijo del hornillo” (farmhouse of the oven), because it housed a large oven for making bread in the central courtyard. In 1836, it was confiscated by the state and, after auction, passed into private hands.

The farmhouse and its surroundings have been used for various film shoots such as The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, For a Few Dollars More, I Am the Revolution, Don Juan, among many others.

The state it is in is really quite neglected, we had seen it in videos before going but we found it even worse, and with signs warning us not to go through due to the danger of collapse. In any case, these types of places always have their charm.

And we go to the last film location in Almeria, which we visited, which as we said are just some of all the ones there are.

The visit will now be to a natural place, we go to the Rambla del Buho in the Tabernas desert.

Rambla del Búho. The Turtle.

The way to get to this location in Almería is at the exit right next to the Fort Bravo theme park. I am leaving the map below with the location to make it easier to get to this location in Almería.

In our case we went because we knew that it was a location for Game of Thrones, but once we arrived we found signs that told us that scenes from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Two Scoundrels in the West with Bud Spencer and the series Mar de Plástico had also been filmed here.

As you will see, in the posters it marks more places in this desert of Tabernas with film locations.

This Llano de Benavides, also known as Llano del Búho in the La Tortuga area, was the setting for many western films in addition to what I am mentioning. Very close to here in the Cabeza de Águila area, for example, The Last of the Mohicans was filmed, among others.
