For all of us who have ever dreamed of visiting Capri:
You are looking at the sea…the blue permeates your retina, you hear the breaking of the small waves, you think it’s paradise…. I know, you are in Capri.
I can’t think of a better introduction than to close my eyes and imagine and so the preamble was born, that and much more is Capri, but…. How to get there, what to see and do on the island?

Visiting the Isle of Capri
The island of Capri is an island in Italy located in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the Sorrento peninsula.
It has an area of just over 10 km², with elevations such as Monte Solana, Capello, Monte San Michele, Monte Tiberio, Monte Tuoro. The island has two municipalities, Capri and Anacapri.
How to get there?
It is an ideal place to take a day trip if you are staying somewhere along the coast such as Naples, Sorrento, Amalfi or Positanoas we were doing. Visiting Capri from any of these points is a great plan.
From Positano we took a ferry (they leave daily), you can also do it from Naples, Sorrento or Amalfi. You have several companies, the trip takes about 20′ or 30′.
The tour is beautiful, setting sail from Positano has a very special charm, because as you go away from the coast the panorama with the hanging houses is really spectacular.

What to do and see when visiting Capri?
You will arrive at Marina Grande, if you go alone for the day (as we did), time will be tight, so the recommendation is to do it early in the morning. If you can stay at least one night, it is ideal, since you will make the tours in a quieter way and you will enjoy the place a lot. Search for hotels in Capri.

Marina Grande
We did the tour without a tour, but you have several options to do it accompanied. Just as the departure from Positano has the charm of seeing the coast, the same happens when you arrive at Marina Grande, as you approach the houses and their colors magically appear before your eyes. When you disembark take some time to walk around this colorful port and its commercial stalls before deciding to go up to the center of Capri, it is a very picturesque place.
As soon as you arrive you will see several options to go up from Marina Grande to the center of Capri and then to Anacapri or go to Marina Piccola, cabs, private tours, funicular, bus, the latter we chose. The bus costs €2,20 each way, we leave you here the ►web with the schedules and prices for each of the bus and funicular routes. Anyway at the bus stop you will find the bus schedules. Hold on tight, though, because the small buses go up quickly and you have several curves to get there.
The center of Capri is much higher than Marina Grande so it is not a good option to walk up if you are not in very good shape and without luggage, higher still is Anacapri.
Capri Center
After choosing the means of transport with which you want to go up, you will arrive in the center of Capri, and then you will begin the magical walk until you reach the elegant clothing stores, restaurants, hotels and colorful bars on Via Vittorio Emanuele and Via Camerelle.
What you cannot escape from is the amount of tourists that visit the island, we again recommend arriving early to enjoy it more.
Piazza Umberto I with its Clock Tower is the nerve center, and a stop for a coffee or a beer in one of its bars while watching the people go by is a very good option, as well as a visit to the San Stefano church.
If you continue touring this beautiful part of the island you can spend time in places like the Charterhouse of San Giacomo, the oldest monastery on the island, or the Gardens of Augustus, a botanical garden of the twentieth century.
Or Via Krupp that descends to the lower part of the island, a beauty.
Marina Piccola
In the lower part of the island, on the opposite side of Marina Grande, we find Marina Piccola. Here we will see beautiful beaches and views of the typical rocks of the island.
We visited in May and on that side of the island the sun was so hot that it was perfect for swimming.

After a while of relaxation we took the bus again, this time to Anacapri.

Anacapri
We arrived at the highest part of the island, very charming and with magnificent views. Apart from the town of Capri that we were just in, there is the town of Anacapri, and a walk through these places is wonderful.
The churches of Santa Sofia and San Michele are among the highlights, a visit to them is worthwhile.
The Red House is another place to see in Anacapri, as the name says it has a red facade, was built between 1876 and 1898, and today houses a collection of paintings mainly with views of Capri. It is very striking and you will find it easily.
In the center of Anacapri we will find Piazza Vittoria, from there we will take a beautiful walk along Via Capodimonte to Villa San Michele, the walk very lively, between commercial places with typical souvenirs is charming, and ends with one of the most typical views of the island. Totally recommended to do this tour.
Blue Grotto
Undoubtedly everyone, or at least most of us, go to Capri with the idea of visiting the Grotta Azurra, the truth is that sometimes it is accessible and sometimes not, in our case we could not do it.
The access from the sea is small, it can be done by boat with very few passengers. As soon as you arrive at Marina Grande you will see locals selling the tour, go to them, find out if that day is accessible and the schedules, so you can organize the visit to the island and at the same time be able to make the tour.
Summary of how to visit Capri
As you may have read, there are so many things to do on the island, if you are going to take your time for a good lunch or snack it will fly by, so organize well what you want to see, and again, try to go on the ferry that leaves early in the morning, if you have more than one schedule to choose from.
In the evening return around 6 pm, when you disembark remember to ask for the departure time.
As we were saying, being able to stay at least one night must be great, although the prices are high, it is an option that we will consider for the next visit.
